replacing a stock deck - '92

what's the easiest way to remove the factory deck from a '92?

Some newer (90's on) ford radios require a special tool to remove the radio. It looks like two "u" shaped wires. They are available at parts stores, walmart, any place that sells car stereos. I also recommend getting the adapter wiring harness. The tool and wiring harness costs about $10- at Walmart. As far as removing the trim pieces, look in a repair manual. If you do not wish to purchase a repair manual for your car, try your local library. autozone.com also has some free repair manuals online. More indepth online repair manuals may also be available through library and school websites. Many libraries and schools subscribe to online databases that can be accessed from home with a library card number or a student I.D. number.

thanks I managed it just with a couple pieces of metal instead of the actual keys and a flathead
but now that it's in there's a weird crackling from the speakers at high volumes :(

You running stock speakers??? They're probably only paper cones, not made for higher output, might be split, on a 92 there's a chance they could be dry-rotted also.. upgrade them if you haven't already, Crutchfield has good info on what fits, then find the best price.

yup they're stock
it's funny though cause with the stock deck I could have it about twice as loud as I can now no problem
and the lights dim when I get the cracking too..so I think it's something a bit deeper than just crummy speakers

Do you have "Loudness" or "Bass Boost" on your new deck and is it turned on? If so, the crackling is probably distortion on the factory speakers because you are overdriving them. Try turning off the enhancement or turning down the bass and see if you get amplitude comparable to what you had with the stock deck, but without the crackling.

The fact that the lights dim leads me to believe you are trying to pump too much bass through the speakers.

I don't recall what the impedance of the factory speakers is, did you happen to check that? If you have a significant impedance mismatch (I doubt it though) it could contribute to distortion and the lights dimming as well.

Unfortunately you will probably need to replace the factory speakers to get the sound you desire. On the bright side though, just about any aftermarket speaker will give better sound than the standard audio system speakers.

I'm assuming your Taurus does not have the Premium or JBL audio systems. If it does, then you probably have a factory amplifier that is being WAY overdriven by your aftermarket deck.

yea with mx turned on or a bass heavy equalizer preset on it's not even worth listening to it has to be so quiet
looks like new speakers are probably the thing..but taking out the door panels/trying to get a the speakers in the ceiling (it's a wagon) sounds like a headache and a half

dont worry about that. i just finished with the whole thing on my 94 taurus wagon and it took about an hour. you just have to remove the old ones and plug in the new ones and you might have to put on a new wire connector depending on the speakers. seriously though it is not hard at all. if you need any help i am here for a buddy!
