Did VW mess up with the New GTi???

It weighs almost 3300lbs, and while its displacement grew along with the power, 207hp 200lbft, it is incredably slow. 0-60 in just 7.1seconds, that's .6 slower than the mkIV. Personally i don't care for the styling either, unless its in black. what do you think? did VW messup new GTI?

NO, i like the styling. have you seen the new R32? if not go to http://www.rapidcars.com/r32.php It looks out of controll!

first of all, ok we disagree on styling, but how can you say they didnt mess up when it only does 0-60 in over 7 seconds. oh and the new r32 if you read is 40,000 dollars and is barely faster than a mkIII GTi.

The GTI is about $20k. 0-60 in 7sec in a car thats 20k is not that bad. the 1/4 mile on the new GTI is under 15 seconds. for comparison, the new beetle Turbo is over $22K and has a 0-60 in about 7 seconds. If you ask me, the new GTI is right where it should be performance wise, and for the money.

no no no surry buddy.... but the new gti is 22k and 0-60 in 7.1 is slow considering the mk IV does it in 6.5 and started at 18k, also the new gti weighs as much as a sedan. oh and like i said before r32 is even worse than the gti. ... 0-60 in 6.3 at 40k is nuts. hmm lets see subaru impreza wrx (not sti) does 0-60 in 5.4, almost whole second faster and has a much more advanced awd system and costs 16k less.... me 2 you 0

Yeah, 16k less than the R32, OK, fine. But Volkwagons are often called the "Poor Mans BMW". So lets consider this, Maybe the new GTI's point isnt to provide a "Extreemly Fast" car, but to combine looks, quality, and a moderately powerful engine. So is the GTI still worse (overall) than any other car thats $22k? No, in fact its a quality car, for a reasonable amount of $.

The 0-60 time of 7.0 seems a bit underrated, which is the trend with German cars. VW claims 6.8 seconds with DSG, and Car & Driver claims it got a European spec GTI 2.0t DSG to 60 in 6 seconds flat using their launch control and 1/4 miled in 14.7. Its not the fastest of the cheaper cars, but I think given the choice between the GTI, SRT4, Cobalt SS, Civic Si, and Saturn Ion Redline, I would take the GTI. Supposedly it handles quite well, and its interior is probably the best in its class. I wish it was lighter, but its still a good car.

not trying to be rude , but why does every1 think its so fast when it does 0-60 in 7.1 and the mkIV, which was 4k less, does it .5 quicker ???

I just bought the new GTI. Its the perfect blend of German engineering, styling, performance, and luxury for 22G. You can't beat it. Test drive one and you'll be a believer, I did and now I've bought one.

I really don't think 7.1 seconds is an accurate time. Like I said before, using a European spec mk.V GTI w/ DSG and using the launch launch control, Car & Driver got a 0-60 time of 6.0. Now launch control isn't available on the US version yet (it will be next year), but the fact remains that under ideal conditions w/ a perfect launch, the car should be good for a low 6 second 0-60.

I for one am very disappointed with the new gti. I fell in love with them ever since mk2s. For one the rear end looks like a jap/usa car(lights). Second yes it has a 2.0 liter engine but only 16 valves, thats 4 less than the 1.8t and 8 less than the vr6. Third the rear valance is so huge, while the front valance is tiny. But one thing i do like is the interior, and the way the hatch opens. Maybe itll grow on me, but sorry i'll take a mk2 with a 1.8t motor on the side and have myself a sleeper.

I like the new styling too. The Mk V is an improvement. And, there's a site that allows you to make it your own. Check it out...vwfeatures.com.

if you wanna see a little "rear end action" did you check out www.vwfeatures.com? when you configure your gti, you can take a ride with the german chick from the commercials - http://youtube.com/watch?v=4NNPvdUw53k&search=gti . vdubb is doin' it right in my opinion

I've been a domestic car person all of my life. And I've built and driven 9 second street cars. I owned a 4 cylinder turbo mustang that ran 11.09@123mph and hit 60mph in about 3.0 seconds. I know all about speed.
However, with the gas prices going sky high, and being on a police officers salary and thinking about saving up some dough for family stuff in the future, I decided to start looking at better, more reliable cars that get good gas mileage and still have some zip to them. I was actually looking at the Ford Fusion (the Ford dealer we buy our crown vic's from seriously hooks us up) with the V6. 26mpg and decent performance for the price. I never even considered VW until a buddy of mine pointed it out the day before I was going to go pick up the Ford. I went up there, drove the new GTI, and fell in love with it. It was hard getting used to the looks and feel of it, but you can really see the detail in the german engineering. The quality of the car was far above the Ford, even though it was $3,000 more, I wanted it. So I picked up a silver GTI package 2 two days ago. The car rides great, handles nice, and actually performs very well. There is also an ECU upgrade that you can buy (not through VW) that puts the car at 250hp and 270ft/lb or something like that. Another $600 and this little dub could move right along. I probably won't mess with that right now, I'm just going to lower the car an inch, put some 18's or 19's on it and tint the windows. Call it good. It's a great blend of all things nice, and this is coming from someone who's had all speed, all luxury, and all economy separately. Two thumbs up from me! :iceslolan
