Check Engine Light For 01 Taurus

Hi All,
My husband and I just bought a used 2001 Taurus this last year and a few months after driving it the check engine light came on. Of course I called and Dealership and they gave me the name and number of the shop that serviced it (since it was a Honda dealership, they only service Hondas and send everything else out to an outside service shop).

Anyways, I went to that shop and the guy ran the codes for me and it seems that the Fuel Gauge or Fuel related is setting the light off. We have noticed that the gas gauge is not always accurate, so we track when to fill up by the tripometer. We now know that the light will come on when it shows empty since it did get down that far and actually the Check Engine light has turned off and the gauge seems to be working but then of course the light comes back on in a few days. By the way, this is a flex fuel vehicle.

Everything else seems to be working fine and we actually were able to drive from Minneapolis to Winnipeg, Canada and back without any problems.

Any suggestions how we can fix the gas gauge?

Thank you in advance for all your help, I am a newbie on this forum. :)

Welcome to the forum. Since it is a flex-fuel vehicle, people look for the worst scenerio. In my experience since 1996 taurus flex-fuel, we have replaced every part in the fuel system. 99% of the time the fuel sending unit in the tank has been the problem. Unless there is a specific code number you could post. If you have exact number, I will search the information for you. Also many other posters will help solve the problem.

My 2000 taurus FFV had problems with the fuel gauge working some of the time. I replaced the fuel sender in the tank and it still did it. The parts guy at another ford dealer suggested replacing the FLEX FUEL Module (located under the dash) to correct this. WOW something that simple. It cost about $25 at any ford dealer and it is a common problem with the FFV vehicles. It takes about 3 minuets to replace it. The FFV vehicles are the only Ford vehicles that use this. Give it a try and let us know:grinyes:
