88 GLI possible engine lock

Need to find out if there is any hope on recovering from engine lock to due possible lack of oil pressure. As soon as I heard the engine start to struggle I began to shut it down but had to contine for about a mile to avoid highway dangers. Once I pulled over and shut off the engine that was it, it wouldn't turnover, crank. Am I dead in the water or is there a possibility of recovery? Thanks to all. :banghead:
