Oil Change Question

does anyone know if a oil change using 10/30 instead of the 5/20 listed for the 01 Taurus 3.1V/6 will cause a problem, had the oil changed at one those quickie places, after I got home I noticed the reciept said they used 10/30 instead of the 5/20. Thank You

We use 15w40 bulk in our fleet. We have had no oil related engine problems on all our vehicles. Mostly Ford products including Taurus.

5W20 is only recommended in any thing to help raise Ford's CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) . I would'nt use it ever, unless I lived somewhere very cold. Good ol 10W30, 10W40 or 15W40 is actually better protection regardless of how often you change your oil, however it may result in a small reduction in gas mileage.

Where on earth did you get this information???? So 5w-20 is now a Ford plot to save money...WRONG! I'd like to hear your answer for why Honda started using it before anyone else and Dodge has been using it in some of their vehicles for several years now. AND I'd like to hear your answer for why Honda will soon start using a 0w-20 oil??? Well???

Lighter(thinner, less viscous, whatever you want to call it) oils are being used these days because the clearances in the engines are much more precise and are becoming increasingly efficient. How do you think they squeeze 150+ HP out of a 2.0L 4 banger. These lighter oils allow good lubrication under those conditions because the weight allow the oil to flow more easily into those extremely tight places. I would use what the manufacturer recommends, and most(manuf.) do say that if 5w-20 is not available to use 5w-30.

As for the oil change shop...they may have actually put in 5-20 or 5-30 and just had 10 on the invoice. If you are concerned, go back and ask them to change the oil again - this time using 5-20. Any shop worth it's salt w/ do this w/o question. If you have any other questions let me know. Hope this helps. M.

In my own opinion I would choose MobileOne for standard everyday use. MobileOne generally costs more but it will last longer than most other oils so it sorta balances out.

If you are using a performance vehicle or a high compression vehicle then you need to shop around, check out forums related to the vehicle and discuss it with a local oil lube specialist.

I've noticed that I have a little bit more valvetrain noise using 10W30 than 5W30 in my '99 Duratec

The reason the V8 SHO's die is the cams breaking loose from the sprocket.
They dont share anything.

On Ford's list of 5W-20 allowed list it omits high compression DOHC, mainly the V8/V6 SHO and LS 3.9L V8.
If you look below you can see the similarities.
V6 SHO: DOHC, 3.0L, 10.0:1
V6 SHO: DOHC, 3.2L, 10.0:1
V8 SHO: DOHC, 3.4L, 10.0:1
V8 LS: DOHC, 3.9L, 10.8:1
V6 Dura: DOHC, 3.0: 10.0:1 (or is it 9.6:1).

instead of taking it back i would thank them for putting in 10w30 instead of 5w20. but thats just my opinion.

FYI,

Honda only recomends 5W20 in the US. In Japan thy recommend 5W40 for optimum protection and 5W20 for best mileage.

Acura recommends 5W30 in the US, so apparently the higher tech Honda performance engine with tight tolerances found in the Acura requires higher protection.

Castrol and others here post warning labels on their 5W20 warning not to use it unless the manufacturer "expressly" says to.

If you can't trust Ford or GM to be straight about simple things like admitting the existence of obvious defects or issuing TSB's in a timely fashion that could have saved people huge repairs down the road, why on earth would you take their word on using thin motor oil, especially if it only benefits them in the long run? They get better CAFE and since most people lease or trade in less than 4 years, its the second or third owner (or hopefully the extended warranty people) that gets burned.

Consumer research has exposed just about every aftermarket oil additive as providing no benefit and in some cases being detrimental to engine life.

While there MAY be US motors that CAN be just fine using 5W20, why screw around with a twenty thousand plus dollar investment? It costs no more to be safe in this case, so why risk it when heavier oil does not void your warranty.

Thanks Again, for all the feedback, the dealer apologized for the error, changed the oil, and will also make the next oil change on the house.

You should check out some of the UOA's posted over at bobistheoilguy.com message board for 5w/20 oils running 5k+ miles. They seem to be pretty robust oils.
