advanced timing pinging

sorry i keep posting new topics, and cant figure this thing out. ok i advanced my timing to 20 degrees since it was stock 18 degrees. first of all what octane should i be using? second i think my car is pinging. is this the loud chattering noise im hearing? it also made this noise when my timing was right, before i had advanced it, its just louder now. think its the gas? i know someone else said valve seals, could it be this? oh yeah, i adjusted and rechecked the valves also they are fine. thanks

If your timing is now at 20* then you retarded it not advanced. And according to the manual you can be at + or - 2* of 18* before TDC and it's ok.

oh so your saying the higher the number the more retarded? i have a craftsman advanced timing light, and it goes from 0-30 i think and my car is on 20 now, so thats retarded? what is a good number of degrees for advanced timing? im so confused, i tried looking it up on google and got nuthing but the math aspect of it. thanks

when i installed a ghetto ebay intake the rubber tube that goes from the top of the engine into the intake was collecting moisture in it because of a dip and it was making a pinging noise while running (sounded like it came out of the intake) i re-routed the hose and it went away. check that.

If you advance your timing you should start running premium, fo sho...Even if you cant hear it your going to get detonation (pinging) and it will scorch everything from valves to cylinder walls. Octane is really the fuel's resistance to combustion (believe it or not). Higher octane will mean thjat the fuel will burn later and not detonate prematurely.

Dude, you're a nice guy and all but you've been putting out more wrong info that some of the newbs lately.

Think about what you said. Stock timing on a a6 should be at 16* BTDC. BTDC stands for before top dead center, which means the ignition is going to fire at at 16* BTDC on the compression stroke. So if you set your timing at 18* its going to fire 2 degrees sooner, meaning its ADVANCED. If you want to retard it you subtract the degrees, making the igition spark later on the stroke.
