Has anyone ever heard of this model doing weird transmission things after braking? I've had two instances of this -- first occurred about 10 months ago and second this morning. First time mechanic couldn't find anything wrong. It didn't do it again. This morning I had to brake and when I went to accelerate again it act like it was trying to gear down and the service engine light flickered. Took foot off gas and allowed it to coast as I was exiting highway and came to a normal stop. upon acceleration again no problem I've driven it around the block (stuck at work today) a couple of times since (twice this morning and three times at lunch) and can't recreate the occurrance. I had driven approximately 24 miles when this occurred today so the engine was warm. Trans fluid adequate level and right color/odor.

Car has 93500 miles on it. V6 vulcan motor, auto transmission, abs. Torque converter in trans was replaced at 55,000 miles.

Also, co-worker suggested bad gas would cause this...got gas on the way to work this morning. I'm taking it by this evening to see if computer will find anything. Anyone have any ideas?

Definately get the codes pulled and let us know.

Very possibly the VSS sensor or a shift solenoid.

Have you ever had work done to your transmission or had it replaced?

Taurus is notorious for their transmissions going out. I have a '99 SE that I bought in November of '04 used. No more than 10 minutes after I left the lot my transmission started slipping (same thing as yours is doing). I drove it a while thinking maybe it'd work itself out since it'd probably been sitting a while and it only got worse. I took it in and as it turns out, the 2-3 clutch pack was bad in it. Well, that was not the original tranny. It was a new tranny that had been put in the car in Oct. of '03. I got a new transmission put in it per warranty in Jan. of '05 and already my 2-3 clutch pack is going out in THIS one.

Basically what it means is that my car slips when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear, sometimes will not shift at all, even manually.

I definately recommend getting it looked at before it turns into a larger problem. If it's just a clutch pack it can be fixed. Also, these cars have the AX4N transmission in them, you can buy them on ebay ranging from $4-800, if you have to get it replaced.

Also, these cars have a recall on their coil spring shields so if you havent gotten that fixed you may want to have it checked out. If they break it can puncture your tire(s) and blowouts on the highway are not fun!

Good luck!!!

No codes have shown up and it's been tested twice. Hasn't acted up again. Did get rear brake drums replaced.
