i recently was told that my bcm body controll module was bad so i unplugged it after i found a used one at a junk yard. i unplugged the bcm and to no avail the headlights are still on. do i have a wiring problem in the fuse box or should i push it outside and light it on fire. im gettin tired of trying to chase this wiring problem. if anyone has any ideas other than the bcm or wants to buy a 1997 gtp red two door let me know. ive taken the fusebox apart and everything looks normall. no broke or burnt wires. i have thought maybee it was the keyless entry sensor or something of that nature because i dont see any other place in the wiring diagram that the headlights and reverse lights are hooked together exept for the fusebox. any help would be much appreciated.....:banghead:

I recall working with someone with a similar problem but I don't recall recommending to replace the BCM module only to disconnect the electrical connectors and see what it does. First off, you have to understand how the circuit works. The BCM is the device via the RKE (remote keyless entry) and theft deterrent system that controls the one second flash to the headlights and backup lights when you use the RKE. The backup lights are not called backup lights for this purpose but external lights.

When lock or unlock is pressed the BCM controls the Theft Deterrent Relay. The one second pulse energizes the coil of the Theft Deterrent Relay which in turn flashes the headlights and backup (external) lights.

If you unplug the BCM connectors and the problem is still there then it is external to the BCM so I do not understand why it was changed.

The next device to check is the Theft Deterrent Relay and/or wiring to it. It may be hung up in the energized position causing your problem. If hung up then your headlights will remain on. It is located by the BCM on the left hand side of the dash. You can open the left dash access panel to see it. It should be the same one that has the shock sensor adjustment. Try pulling the Theft Deterrent Relay out or disconnecting the coil wires and see what it does.

BTW - You will not find where the Theft Deterrent System connects to the backup lights in the GM wiring diagrams because it does not show it. However, concentrate on the Theft Deterrent Relay circuits and you may solve your problem. Good luck!

i unplugged the bcm and the black box right beside it and the headlights and reverse was still on. im trying to determine which one the theft deterent relay is. i unplugged the shock sensor or what i believe is it. its a kinda oval round shaped thing right under the stearing column. any more suggestions hit me back asap

According to the '97 GP GM service manual the theft deterrent relay is supposed to be mounted to the leading edge of the tray that holds the BCM module. The other module was probably the DRL module. If it is not there then try behind the passenger side of the dashboard behind or around the glove box opening. Some relays like retained accessory power (RAP) are located there and mounted to the metal dash frame. But it sure sounds like the TD relay is stuck to the on position.

Good luck!

ok what was the DLR module. the bcm was toward the firewall then there was the black thing i unplugged then there was three little square modules that are sideways compared to the rest. the bottom one is grey and the top two are black. when i hit the door lock and unlock button on my keyless remote the grey one clicks along with the black box inbetween the grey module and the bcm. am in in the right place
ive unplugged them all including the shock switch. i have yet to unplugg the two top black modules or whatever they are. but im goin to continue troubleshooting b4 i have to pay a bunch at the dealership.. ty for the reply its greatly appreciated

The TD relay has to be one of the remaining modules.

The coil of that relay has two wires color coded orange and white. Orange goes to contact C2 and white goes to contact A1. When you press lock or unlock this will have 12v present for one second. The contacts of the TD relay used to flash the headlights and backup lights are A2 and C1. A2 has an orange wire and C1 has a yellow. The yellow wire is the output of the relay that flashes the lights for one second. Contact A2 (orange) is always hot with 12 volts.

For the headlights and backup lamps to stay on the yellow wire at contact C1 will probably have 12 volts on it at all times, which of course is abnormal.

I wish I could tell you more but thats all I can do to help for now. Good luck!

ok i unplugged every single thing i can get my hands on underneath the dash on the drivers side without setting off the airbags. i removed the whole glovebox assembly on the passenger side in hope of finding something. i pulled the module off under the drivers side that was supposedly the td relay it had,,, 2 orange wires hot all the time, a white wire that was hot all the time and, the yellow wire was not hot...... so now untill i get a reply to go somewhere else im goin behind the glove box and start pullin the RAP relays to see if one of them is the culprit so let me know if anyone has any answers..... anyone have any more info they want to pass along while im out in the shop call me on my cell 1 815 791 6626 the names nick ty
