how much maintance is envolved with owning a 3000gt or a vr4

Depends on what you consider a lot of maintenance... A 300GT is not a camry.
That said, stock-wise it's a reliable as you expect for a car it's age. The only real weaknesses is changing the timing belt (it's an interference engine and lots of bad things happen if it breaks, but if you change it you have to change 3 other things as well) and the syncho on the 2nd gear (it's chronically notchy unless the transmission has been rebuilt).
Other then that age and abuse define the rest of the maintenace (boost leaks, clutch changes, clutch master cylinder leaks, etc.)
If you are mechnically inclined and can avoid doing maintenance at dealerships it's not bad.
