2004 Sierra 1500 Regency Positraction

I recently bought a 2004 Sierra 1500 truck with a regency conversion. It still has the stock drivetrain for a vortec 4800 regular cab, short bed. The traction is not sufficient for the truck and I am considering purchasing a positraction differential. I was wondering if anyone has done this on a similar truck or knows what differential I need, or even just the gear ration my truck has in it. Also by installing posi will the rest of my drivetrain (clutch and transmission) be able to handle the extra torque?

Thanks!

For the gear ratio look at the RPO codes on the sticker in the glove box.

GU6 3.08
GU4 3.42
GT4 3.73
GT5 4.10

Just guessing, your is probably 3.42

Also G80 is factory positrac.

Installation of positrac shouldn't have any effect on the rest of the driveline (my opinion).

I am looking at a truetrac differential made by tractech for my 96. Check out www.reiderracing.com they have several listed.

Go with a air locker or electronic locking differential. will work much better
I have the Eaton Positraction unit. It works great but sometimes I would like it to be unlocked.

Thanks for all your help. I was wondering what it takes to install these units. Should I just have my GMC dealership install this or is it something I could do myself without buying specialized tools?

I had a local ring and pinion shop install mine. I wasn't sure if I had other problems. The stock locker stopped working. Installation and parts was around $500. The problem I have is that the pick up doesnt' have enough weight in back to allow the differential to slip on turns. causing more wear on the tires.
If you only need to have the positraction sometimes the air or electronic are the best way to go. Thats what I am getting next time.
