Can I clear the grille assembly by disconnecting the transmission?

take off the two u-joint caps, place a large screw-driver or pry bar between the u-joint and the yoke of the rear end and apply a littl pressue being careful not to dilodge the end-caps of the j-joints. I generally have taken some tape to wrap around the u-joints with the caps installed so they don't come off and you loose some needle bearings. Mark your hood and take the hood off if you have not done so already.

When you say "mark your hood, what do you mean? Mark the shaft so I know how to put it back?

He means to mark where the hinges are on the hood so that when you put it back, you won't have to adjust it alot to get it to shut and be flush with the front and fenders again. Unless you're a neat freak, most of the ones I've pulled off had enough of a shiny line on them to get the four bolts back into the right spot, but it doesn't hurt. And yes, with the radiator out, the engine will clear just fine (take the fan off but you can leave the water pump.) If you can tilt the engine during the lift, you can leave the transmission on it (minus the transfer case.) If you have something to act as a shield such as a a piece of sheet metal, you can even leave the radiator in. I remember doing a 350 for 305 swap for my dad in his '81. It was a standard out and in, just a butt-load of vacuum hoses to hook up on those years.

Would putting the truck in nutral make the drive shft come off easier?

Now do I need to hook up all these vacuum hoses when installing the small block isn't this a bunch of emissions stuff that don't apply to my 82?

might, might not, if youre lucky, you may only have the vaccuum advance on the distributor, transmission modulator, and the vaccuum heater/ac vent thing lol i dont know the technical name for that, other than those 3, there may be the power brakes booster and the pcv valve, although there might be more crud like if you have heat risers and crap on your exhaust manifolds... just try to transfer everything over, and if you can, take pictures incase you mess up... digital is easy if you own a digital camera, but a cheapo disposable will work fine

I put aftermarket headers on the small block from Flow-Tech.

Ok here's what's going on now. I got the drive shaft off. Motor mount bolts are out. Power steering pump is unhooked, radiator is out. A/c unhooked, Exhaust system is off and out of the way.

My goal is to pull the straight 6 out by itself. I can take the fan off to give me more room. Should I?

I can see four of the bolts connecting my 700R trans to the 6. I can't see the other two on top. Are they even there on the 6. :dunno: :feedback:

When I pull an engine I split it at the bell housing and leave the transmission in place. Much faster and easier. Just make sure you undo the bolts from the flex plate to the torque converter.

I put Sierra in the air on 4 3Ton Jack Stands pulled the motor and trans together. After I got them so far out I droped the front end down giving me the angle I needed to just lift the tail of the trans over the grille.

nice, lol i had an easy time pulling my old 350 and th400 together out of my truck... im in a frame up restoration, so there was no front sheet metal in the way lol... about as simple as could be
