Why is the European Ford Sierra Not listed in the Ford section? Does anyone remeber the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth? It's a 4 cylinder road rocket, so it should be listed! It's basically the same as the american Merkur xr4ti, only that is has a 2.0 liter 16 valve turbo cosworth engine, and way cooler styling!

Cool cars you have there xrscooby, I wish I had some more cash! then I would go for the Escort Cosworth.
But the sierra I have now, will have to do for a while longer.
I like the car a lot, it's got full cossie styling and it's been lowered 40mm, it has 16"x7,5" Momo arrows on it.
Currently rebuilding a 2l sohc engine. And this unit will give the car a tad more punch than the 1,6l engine.
Rebored block with forged Mahle pistons 91,93mm placed above deck, balanced rods and crank. Dual 45 Dcoe weber carbs on a hi-flow intake. Kent rl 31 camshaft. Fully adjustable Steel Pulley, Ported head and 2,5" race manifold.
I don't know how much hp it will give, but I guess it's in the range of 150-200 hp.
Hope to install the engine this weekend. :sun:

Sounds like fun!.A friend has is just about to finish his high compression 2.8 block for his 4i which should be interesting..
A few details on my cars can be found here!
http://www.xrsouthern.co.uk/profiles/scooby.htm
I think the 2 litre pinto was about 125BHP as standard so you should easily get into the 150-200 bracket..

The standard 2l pinto in carbed form was 105hp, the injection model had 115 i think, and the IS dohc engine 120hp. The later zetec engine has about 130hp. The engine rebuilder that machined the top, so i could fit the dual springs for the cam. He built a sohc engine with bigger valves and plowported head and about the same setup as i have, and it produced 223hp. that's awsome for an n/a sohc engine.
with a cosworth block and modified cosworth head in N/A form can deliver 350bhp. think what that would sound like? add some nitrous oxide there, and were up in 450bhp non turbo 2litre. but the costs must be awfull...

Here's a picture of the Sohc 2,074L engine. Hope it will fit under the hood, had to move the brake cylinder 3cm, and that's all it could be moved. The trumpets on the carbs had under 1 cm of clearance to the brakelines, so it's about 3-4 cm clearance after moving the cylinder. the filters do add some space tho.

Mine is a Rhd car, so the brake cylinder an steering pin is allways in the way....lol
but it gives a lot of room for the manifold, and that's why i bought the 2,5" race mainfold. 4-1 type. the only thing that could get in the way is the starter and the dynomo.
But I guess i will find my way around that as well.

Hi Scooby,
I can understand your problem about choosing a colour. A friend of mine just done his XR Cabrio in a copper colour. I think its a peugeot colour. At first I thought he was mad, but now that it's done, it looks great. Really nice colour, don't know if it would suit the sierra though. Hope you come up with something, can't say that I am a lover of red though. I try to avoid buying red cars.

I think red cars are cool, I'm thinking of painting my car red. I'm not sure yet tho. I was wondering about black metallic or moonstone blue, but there is something about Porche red.
The wheels on your car are not of the sort "cool" in any way. Antera wheels must be some of the ugliest wheels out there, but then again that's my opinion.
I have MOMO Arrrow's 16"x7,5" and Saphire Cosworth 15" wheels for my sierra. And I think the MOMO's are quite cool.

i'm fed up with that front bumper now, its a grp one and the brakets keep breaking, i'm forever repairing it. just doing my head in now. a genuine cossie one go for £250. i ain't got that kind of money!

:frog: Damn that engine was heavy to lift, since i had to lift it by hand. A friend of mine helped me to lift it inn, but it was still heavy! when the engine was in I thought the rest must be a breeze to put in. 1st problem was the race manifold would not fit, it was 2 big. so i had to get under the car and use a sledgehammer to widen the space between the gearbox and the torpedo wall. 2nd problem was the hoses for the oil cooler. the hydrolic steelarmed hoses were so hard to get on the fittings, took about 2hrs of heating and lubing to get them on! The rest of the exhaust was easy to fit tho. 2,5" system all the way, it looked so huge compared to the original system. When i reached the rear end of the car I saw a dent in my cosworth alloy, I wonder how much that will cost me? The new electric fuel pump does make a cool buzzing sound, so I guess it's not long untill I can fire up the engine. just have to fit the throtle cable, and choke cable. and some other stuff as well.
Just saw an unbelivable movie that I downloaded from the net. If you've seen the movie "The fast and the furious" then you have to see the real thing. "Getaway in stockholm 2" it's a toyota supra and a Escort cosworth tuned to about 450hp and they reach over 300 km/h in Stockholm city. The cops have no chance to catch them.

Hi again, it's been a while since my last post. Right before Xmas someone broke into my car, they busted my window, glovebox. they did not steel anything. but I had to replace the broken window, since the doors had some rust on them I got hold on 2 nice original cossie doors with power window, power mirrors and central locks. I don't have the door panel with the switches for the mirror or window. so I wonder if anyone could help me out on how to connect all of the 13 cables that come out of each door? the she connector that comes out right above where the manual window winder sits has a 6 cable she conector. I guess this would be where a "joystick" control should be fitted? or does this 6 wire loom control the windows as well?
does anyone have the wireing diagram on how to connect everything? and what kind of releys I need? Thanx for any help! cuz I no nothing about car electronics.
I have run in the pinto engine now. And adjusted the main jet's on the carbs. I wonder if it is normal that the car backfires when not putting the pedal to the metal. when I drive downhill and not giving gas it backfires, does this mean it's not getting enough on the idle jets? it does pull great when I go abowe 5000 rpm.
Hope that anyone can help me with the wiering and what sierra models that has the wires and buttons I need. cuz I think I have to take a trip to the scrap jard and pull out some wires.

Hi..first up...21 January...If you want to buy a superb RS Cosworth...check ebay Australia right now..38000Kms (that's less than 20,000 miles) 1986,....magic colour...condition like new...$39000 Aussie or offer. This car would be as good as anything it is possible to buy...probably worth the import too if you are in USA or UK.
In France I have a 1991 4x4 sapphire cosworth in standard trim, non cataltic..runs about 220 Hp. I am not so terribly impressed with the suspension design as a critque but they ran well and won rallies so maybe I ought to let that go. These cars have plenty of grunt...but return good mileage when you don't drive them hard.
The motors are legendary. They can be taken to at least 750Hp but that's for race cars and then it's time to think. On the street they can be taken to 520/550...but why bother? It isn't some US battleship, it's a moderate weight car. If you want to run 280 ok..but all this conversion makes other items stresses too when you put the boot into it. That the 4x4 cannot handle more than it can at the gearbox doesn't mean it is "weak" it simply means the concept was never designed for that power...in using the viscous coupling for the 4wd. All non-constant 4wd's have the same sorts of limitations.
My SAAB Carlsson 2.3 Turbo would be near as quick maybe quicker as the Cosworth here and there but they are different cars entirely...and I like rear wheel drive. The huge difference is that the SAAB was brought up to 220 Hp, though limited by boost and turbo size and the engineering of front wheel drive whereas the Cosworth was brought DOWN to 220Hp (forget about the all important torque for this comment)..thus the Cossie is heading back home, as power is increased.
The SAAB naturally has less transmission losses than a rwd car and socan be more effective here and there...but a 15 to 20 year old turbo R5 Renault will give most of you a shock when you give it a nudge and that's only 1300cc turbo'd...their rarer R5 rally, twin turbo centrally mounted engine will whip, in practice, 98% of anything on the road...but here we are discusiing the fantastic Cosworth...a car whose history (Cosworth's) is really worth reading.
Another warning..it's well and good to go on about cars which have specs. when near new but to apply them to a tired one is foolhardy. Cosworth 4x4's will not, in good nick, take more than 450 hp at the viscous gearbox. In other words...that is the LIMIT....and it will die.
The 2 wd will take more, probably up to 500Hp max but why bother?...you'd rarely use 250Hp let alone 500Hp and the violent acceleration is where the wear and tear comes in.
We are no longer speaking about monsters like a 57 Olds needing 455 hp and triple factory carbs to keep up with an Alfa 2litre until a corner comes up.....and never seeing more than 10 seconds of the tail end of a fast Lancia. Light cars have light but strong components and give stirling performance...and these days some give 5 year warranties as standard..eg Hyundai and I think Suburu. A Standard Coswoth would be far better approached with suspension and tyre improvements than going past 220 or at most 280 Hp....making what you have more effective and less a comfort-sports vehicle and more "sports", if you want. Beats me...if you want to crawl in and out of "race" recaro seats and small cabins why not live in a packing crate...you may as well for all the pleasure you really get...all that stuff wears off with time....and hotted up engines and lead foot drivers make a car old before its time.
Sadly less than one in 10,000 people have any idea of suspension realities..most look for bolt on "improvements"...such as poly bushes (use the originals!). Camber kits and some others do have a place but suspension tuning such as Eibach with Bilstein sports shocks, a competent and road tested alignment and REALLY good tyres...Yokahama, Mitchelin Pilot, that sot of tyre and better...will transform a car better than adding 100 Horsepower...and make the car far better to drive. Just keeping the original or modified suspension and tyres well maintained will make the car a pleasure to drive on the road.
I mentioned component limitations...and the 4x4 gearbox being a risk after 450Hp...or close to it.....The 2wd brings more money for that reason, yet for 99.99999repeating of owners none of that will ever make any difference.
The Vast fuel price increases (nearly tripled in Australia) brought on by the invasion of Iraq and profiteering by certain sacred-cow companies involved in the fiasco have made it very expensive to drive classic cars. That's a shame in some ways but will bring engine improvements as time goes on. Several car companies are already shaky...they don't seem to learn.
My other car in France is a hatchback XR 4x4 with V6. Red...in this colour a very beautiful car and a fine driver even standard. I bought mine with more faults than I realised it had...but the jumping out of reverse is a real pain in the neck...I may sort it out when I return..it also has an intermittent starting problem...likely a sensor as the basics are ok...Buy one of these in good nick and low mileage and red black or green and for me...that's a car for life...do the suspension and just look at what a beautiful thing it is!..I saw a really nice late red one recently for sale in France for 3000eu and yearned for it! In Australia you never see them really ....but then I have the car to end all cars the SAAB 9000 Carlsson 5 door Hatch LOL!!...only 122 made for the world , possibly 50 to 70 left? in CD and maybe same in 9000 CS where 129 were made. There might have been another 159 or so in the 900...a completely different concept of car.
In the UK a beautiful red Sierra V6 Estate Waggon was just sold for 480 pounds Sterling on ebay ...I could weep!
Anyway hopefully that is entertaining and informative. personal emails ok to [email protected].
Cheers Tony
