Just got some free subs

So, my older sister just bought me two subs for my birthday. I know absolutly nothing about car audio or how to hook it up. The are 10" Dual brand speakers (I do know enough to know that these aren't exactly the best of quality), but I got them for free. What do I need to look at getting? I know I'll have to get a box, an amp and wires obviously. My head unit is stock, i have stock door speakers and Pioneer 6x9's in the back. Recommendations on brands are welcome, I'm trying to spend as little as possible and get a decent sound, so an estimate on price would be nice. I'm assuming I'll have to pay for installation too, I have to take that into account.

It will be helpful if you say what kind of music you listen to most, what your approximate budget is... and will you be doing anything yourself, what about building the enclosure?

Most of what I listen to is rock, a little rap, but not much at all. I'm just looking for a little more bass than my 6x9's can provide. Budget is as little as i can possibly spend. I was looking at having a friend build me a box, spending under $100 for an amp (i dont need a very powerful one). I could have a friend install the system, but I'd rather have a licensed installer do it.

If you are looking for a amp to push your subs with and further info then we need to know what power rating and impedance of the subs. Being Dual subs they are probably 4 ohm single voice coils and handle in the range of 500 watts. If you are going to have your friend build your box for you make sure he knows what he's doing as if it's built incorrectly and it leaks air then it will make the subs sound bad. For a descent amp and cheap price check out this link.

That website is pretty much the only one I deal with when buying car stereo components except for certain things that they don't have in stock or certain models. Here's a link on the same site for an amp install kit that would take care of the amp, and if you install it yourself you will save money versus having a shop install it for you.

You can also check out replacement door speakers to match the pioneers that you have in the deck. The doors in your car probably use a 5 1/4" speaker. As for replacement head units you will need to buy the head unit a dash installation kit and a factory wiring harness. The installation kit and wiring harness can be picked up at electronic express or circuit city for about $30-$40 depending on what you go with and where you go. On that website you can click on the cd players in the left column and they have a pioneer deh-1700 for $89. Pioneer is a pretty reliable brand and fairly priced as well although with car stereo's the old saying goes you get what you pay for. And as for the box if you mostly listen to rock build a sealed box as it will give tighter and quicker response and still be able to produce the sound when you want to listen to some rap. And on that site I linked above the shipping is free cutting down on the cost more and is cheaper than most any car stereo store nearby.

That is first prority

next on the listis amps. i have a sony 444 for sale for $30 + Shipping. It works but the front chanel doesnt have a working LPF. So the front chanel is kinda worthless for subs.

if you are looking to buy new i highly reccomend you go over to Caraudio.com and look for the USamps group buy. They have an 80x2 amp (true watts) that flakko is selling in the group buy.(dont toil in the retardation there, you will end up like them, despised any laughed at by most audiophiles, if you are serious about getting into car audio there are a few other more helpful, more laied back, and more intelegent places)

Other than that you just need wiring and enclosure and possibly a LOC (line over converter) LOC's convert high voltage speaker ready signal to low voltage RCA signal.

OR

the other thing i highly reccomend you look for an amp with line level inputs. Im pretty sure USamp doest mess in that garbage so you will need an LOC with the 2080 where as with say a Profile you wont. Thing about the USamps is that USamps is top of the line. at and above the level of JL. the profile is a sony that does closer to rated wattage.

IF you wanted to get a cheap Passive LPF (could even build one if you are proficent with soldering) the Sony 444 has high level ins so all you would have to do is run wires to the amp like your run wires to your 6x9's.

as for the enclsoure, how much room do you have?

Well, I've been looking around the internet for amps and boxes, and I found these two that seem to be at reasonable prices.

Box:

Amp:

Is that amp more or less than I really need? One of my friends that knows about audio (not much about car audio though) said that it would match my subs well, but I wanted an opinion from someone with car audio experience. Oh, by the way, here's the exact subs that I have:

Man that boss amp wont push enough power to tingle my balls. I have had several profile amps i was happy with the performance for the price and how durable they are to grounding out (long story). You wont need anything amazing in power to move the duals maybe 150rms at the most. Like fryman said usamps is top quality for amps.

Another option you could look at is in a 5channel amp i know its almost forbidden to an audiophile but i just got one for my girls car to move 2 infinity 4's in the front and a set of jbl 6x9's in the back and a re 12". Sounds pretty good just need to get her a set of components for the front. Its a cavalier so it didnt need anything special, but shes getting better at telling what sounds good, compared to other stuff.

I don't mean to be rude, but is there any chance your sister could return the two subs and buy you just one that is a higher quality brand? It would also take up less space in the trunk.

Unfortunatly, no, becuase she bought them for me off of a guy who lives in my dorm. I have, however, had the thought of selling them myself and putting the money towards a better system. One of my friends is selling his set of an amp and two 12" subs, it's this set:

Again, not the highest quality, but I've actually heard this one and it's decent. It's a little "rumbly" for my taste, but beggars can't be choosers I suppose.

Have you ever considered ebay at all for a system you can get a decent system for under 250. The duals are probably better than a set of visoniks. If you decide to get something better since your not looking for the best of the best, look on ebay for Infinity perfects, polk momo series, kicker cvr's, alpine type r's. I had a set of perfects with 150rms to each in a prefab sealed box my first system, hit pretty hard comparable to people pushing like 500 to a set of 12's these could hit pretty close to them and they sounded good. If not look into a set of REaudio-RE's or SE's i think you can get the RE's for less than a 100 a piece and they only need like 150 watts.

If you sell the subs yourself locally or even on eBay, then you can be a chooser.
