I just replaced the ignition key switch on my 1987 Laredo but it still won't go into the lock or accessories position. Any ideas or help, Please??????
My new job requires me to be able to secure my vehicle from theft.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Zack

Check the ignition switch on the lower part of the steering column under the dash and make sure the slider that the actuating rod goes in is in the right position. The best way is to remove the ignition switch and if you hold the switch the same way it mounts to the column then pull the slider all the way back towards the steering wheel which will put it in the acc. position. Then when you are reinstalling the switch put the ignition key in the acc. position and be careful when putting it in that the slider in the switch doesn't move and that should take care of it for you. If however when you have the switch removed the key will not go into the lock or acc. position and it is the floor mount automatic shifter then it is probably the actuator rod inside the column that prevents the vehicle from being put into gear while the ignition is in the off position. Mine was having the same problem and I completely removed the actuator rod and it is able to go into gear with the key removed. Not a good idea if you are worried about theft deterrent but check the linkages for the shifter and the actuator rod to make sure that nothing is getting bound up. If that all checks out well then pull the lock cylinder again and check the actuator rod's movement in the switch and put it in the acc. position and put the lock cylinder in the acc. position and try reinstalling it. Hope that helps you out.
