Starter noises

Ok, so we all know how the DSM's starters like to make that funny noise right after we start our cars for a second or two. My question is, what is the sure way to fix it? Does the starter need replaced or is there another fix for it? I have my tranny and everything out right now and have clear access to my starter and figured this would be the time to fix it... Anyone else fixed it or know for sure why it does that sound?

What sound? Right after it starts or during cranking?

What kind of sound are you talking about? Lately, well before I tore everything apart, after I started my car it was making a whiny noise when I reved it at low throttle from 2k-3500 RPM it actually sounded like a blower lol. Is that sound familiar at all?

Right after it starts, its like a squeeking and metal on metal scraping sound.

Is there any visable damage to the ring gear on the flywheel or on the gear on the starter?

I donno, I didn't look that closely. I was more concerned with getting the tranny out of there and over to Shepherd. I'm gonna go work on the Firebird here in a little bit and I'll check those gears while I'm out there too.

If there is any damage to either gear the noise is probably made my the clashing of gears and all that, if not I would suggest taking the starter apart(really simple) and seeing if the internal gears are all ok

Mine does the same thing. I figured it's going bad and will have to be replaced at some point...

Well, I check out the starter and it seemed to have no abnormal wear. I didn't take it apart tonight though because I had to work on the Firebird's exhaust. I'll post up some pictures of the starter gears later tonight.

**EDIT**
I have the picture of the starter gear in my project thread.
