*edit: Out in the middle of nowhere while SAFELY & REASONABLY driving an old man's car to a wedding*, the officer wrote me a bogus ticket for "excessive speed". I wasn't. The Speed Measurement Device was listed as "R-M".
What is an "R-M", and does anyone know of a good lawyer in Arizona?

That is actually a good point that I will bring up in court... If I was really going that fast how did he catch me so quickly?

I did the same, I was going 130, buzed a stoped cop, he never caught up in the least and finally gave up
guess he called ahead, but they didnt recogonise me?...pulled over someone else instead.
With that, unless he was going 80 alongside you, odds are he wouldnt catch up. Hope it works out for you :(

I feel your pain. I just got a freaking $691 ticket for supposedly running a stop sign going 10 m.p.h.. What has this world come too? I mean, the lapd motto reads, "to serve and protect." right... your gonna protect me by hiding behind a bushy tree trying to catch me in an illegal act. Damn cops! I am going to fight it and win because that damn cops partner even got out of the car to tell me that she saw me stop. Is it possible to sue his ass?

Bummer DMC! What the hell is R-M? Maybe radar monitor. Maybe if you were near an airport you can tell the office and/or the judge that your car cannot really go 600mph!
Wicked, $600 ticket for blowing a stop sign! My son got a ticket a couple of years ago for a California Stop (rolling through the stop sign) and it was $125.
Sometimes you have to wonder about the police. One night a customer of mine and I were standing at a cross walk waiting for the light to turn green by County USC Medical Center, it was about 1:00 a.m. and I was on a repair call for a T1 data circuit, when a car drives by with no lights on and runs right through the red light. Guess whose sitting at the opposing corner, a LAPD patrol car. Both of us just stayed on the curb expecting this officer to give chase, but he turns the other way and keeps on going! Must have been late for his doughnut.

If I lose my license, that will totally screw up my living situation. I might as well buy a weatherproof sleeping bag and camp out behind my office :(
This whole situation makes me happy for terrorists and radicals that are trying to change things. I mean, the police just have so much control over our lives. The officer mentioned that the ticket is "money wasted"... but do they stop to think that your insurance will go up ($1300 more a year)? Do they stop to think that I might lose my job because I can't live without a license? I don't give a fuck about th ticket cost.. it is so small when compared to everything else.
I'm really starting to lean towards becoming a full-on criminal, since that seems to be what society WANTS me to be! Go Osama!!! I hope they really do bomb something on the 4th of July. America sucks.
What ever happened to the constitution??????????

Ah yes, now you will find out ANOTHER reason why I am so pissed at cops...
He had three different traffic codes to choose from. Two out of the three allowed you to take a safety class & they would not report it to insurance. So what does he pick?!? The one code that doen not allow for traffic school.
It looks like I also have to fly back to Arizona ($) and appear in court, so I'll be losing a day or two of work (they won't be too happy). At the least, I will be posting what happens... I'm sure it will be a real learning experience for us all.

 Why didn't YOU stop to think about that BEFORE you drove above the limit. YOU knowingly and intentionally broke the law. This time they caught you. It's not the cops' job to make sure you have a license, and it's not their job to make sure your insurance is cheap. You want to drive fast, go to a track. If you are going to drive fast or dangerously on public streets, you are accepting the risk of getting caught, and with that, the risk of losing your license and paying many $$$ insurance. You weighed those risks and still decided to drive above the limit. Now stand up and accept the consequences you have brought upon yourself.

Blind faith to the lawmakers... good! I'm sure that is what they want. That is what Hitler dreamed of... a nation of lemmings like you. It is not my intention of this post to blindly insult you, but please step out of yourself & listen to what you said! You are just a "parrothead", as the famous musical group sang about so many years ago.
I was not driving fast, and I was not driving recklessly. These "speed" laws we have are arbitrary and pointless; they seem to exist to increase the bank accounts of The Man! A few generations ago, there was no "Maximum speed" law. In at least one state, they have taken the law away, and you can drive according to the prevailing conditions. Moving to another state/country is futile. You can run from these types of Communist beliefs, but you can't hide. Sooner or later, they will come to your town/state/country and police you into submission... just as the US is doing in other countries.

Well, unless your talking about having a revolution for the laws on the roads, then yah. But heres a thought, if you have it for prevaling conditions only youll have a bustass civic with balding tires going 100, your cars can do 100 DMC12, mine can, most peoples here can, but some peoples cant, and they would need to be slowed down
also, cops could say "your going too fast" and it would be their choice, not yours for the conditions.
That would allow for more of a dictatorship type rulling.
But in another sence, I do agree that alot of these speedlimits are full of shit, and if the car/driver can take it, maby a second set of speed limits would be acceptable? And also on the 10 where you were, where its open road and sand, 100 is a fine speed.
Also I agree that when we speed, when we race, we know the risks. Its a game we play when we play in traffic, if we get caught, they were the better player. :bandit:

Sorry, but this is totally wrong.Any argument that relies on comparing your opponent to an historical tyrant is fundamentally weak - to compare your opponent to tyranny from both ends of the spectrum is simply ridiculous.if you can't make an argument stand on its own two feet, you need to look at its basic premise and rethink your approach.
Laws are made in democratic society, not for the common utility, but to protect us from the weak.Often they are a difficult pill to swallow, and the point at which the line is drawn may seem to be arbitrary.Often, bad laws are passed for no other reason than political expediency. But the laws built on sound principles are the ones that endure,in whatever form is deemed most suited to the times.
The first laws on motor vehicle speed were so draconian as to beggar belief.Largely motivated by the political lobbying of horse-drawn transport interests, they required all self-propelled vehicles to be escorted by a man on foot carrying a red flag! While the limits have thankfully been repeatedly relaxed(and occasionally tightened),the principle of law has endured, for the simple reason that it makes sense.
While you may well believe that the law in your location does not reflect your level of skill,or the mechanical capabilities of your vehicle, the law is not written soley for you.Factors such as traffic density, pedestrian density, overall condition of roads ,vehicles, and driver skills all play a part. The most telling statistic is that of the number of 'accidents'.Most of these events can be diminished or eliminated, simply by reducing speed.
If you choose to exceed the speed limit, and get caught, expect no sympathy from me.The police officer gets my sympathy for doing his best to keep you alive, and getting damn-all thanks from you in return.

Well said Mr. T. I went searching all over the 'net for facts to back up my stance, and got so engrossed that only hours later am I returning to this thread to reply to DMC12.
DMC12:
I see you have assumed that I choose to obey the law out of blind faith, but on the contrary, it is out of educated respect. As Taranaki said, the law is not written for every person on the road, but to protect the majority of us from the stupid minority. However it is vital that everyon e follow the law, as studies have shown that those who stray furthest from the median speed of traffic, whether faster or slower, are those most likely to cause (and possibly be involved in) an accident. And so you're aware, speed limit laws came into effect very shortly after the advent of motor vehicles, not just "a few generations ago". It was in Connecticut that the first speed limit was imposed: 15 mph on country highways, 12 in the city. They did not exist prior to that because humans posessed nothing capable of exceeding what was deemed to be a reasonable speed.
I have chosen not to exceed the speed limit based on many personal experiences, and several scientific findings. Personal experiences:
a. 2 car accidents, both caused by others violating the laws and both entirely unavoidable by me.
b. Numerous near misses caused by others violating various laws, barely avoidable by me.
c. Incidences where people were violating little more than common sense, but nearly caused my death. (The unsecured 12 foot extension ladder falling off a flatbed truck and penetrating the radiator of the vehicle in front of me comes to mind. This was, of course, in a 75 mph zone. Had the ladder hit a foot higher it would have killed the driver.)
Scientific findings:
a. Because of inertia, stopping distance is exponential in relation to speed. If speed doubles, required stopping distance quadruples, and this is NOT INCLUDING the distance covered while the brakelights in front of you activate, the light travels to your eyes, they send the information to your brain, your brain processes the information, sends a signal to your right foot, which moves off the accelerator and presses on the brakes, and the brakes engage. The preceding takes approximately 1.5 seconds, during which time you have travelled 165 feet, assuming you were going 75 mph. Based on the data obtained from independent sources NOT propogated by "the man" (because as we all know "the man" is evil and spends his time trying to stop all our "harmless" fun  ) I have decided that obeying the law is in my best interest. I know enjoy leisurely driving in traffic, watching people who are in a hurry zip along past me and then get stuck next to me at one light after another.
b. http://www.batesville.k12.in.us/physics/PhyNet/Mechanics/Kinematics/BrakingDistData.html
c. http://www.scottsdalelaw.com/shepston/braking.html
d. http://www.amasci.com/amateur/traffic/traffic1.html
You remind me of someone who sits by a lion's cage, jabbing at its eyeballs, and then cries when it bites off your arm. And then of course, you go back for more. You know the lion bites, and poking its eyes IS fun, but is it smart? And then you come whining to us because the lion bit off your last limb, why didn't he think of how hard it would be for you to hold down a job with no limbs?
I used to speed around with no regard, then I figured out the math of things and realized that saving 4 minutes off a 50 mile commute by going 20 over wasn't worth it. Maybe one day you will grow up too.
Regards,
boingo82

Jeez, you sound like my dad. Most of the speed limits in Napa (where I live) are all crap. There is a main throughfare in my town (soscol ave) where the speed limit is 40. But a similar throughfare in Sacramento (sunset Dr) the speed limit is 55. What the hell. And wide open roads (I use I-5 as an example) have no good reason for having a speed limit at all (except near towns / overpasses)
Over the past week I have done a lot of driving. I have gone to Sacarmento and back twice this last week, in each instance doing 80 in a 65 zone while people are still PASSING me, I just set the cruise contol.
I also went to Chico, and while on 505 (connector between 80 and 5) I was doing 90 in a 70 with people still PASSING me.
Basically, I will speed as long as I am not the fastest car. Maybe I should have gone faster on 505 because it isnt air patrolled as good as I5. But the threat that there may be a cop still is there, and I chose to go a reasonable speed over the limit, and I traveled at a speed safe for conditions.
Also, people that go REAL FAST a lot, you need to consider the wear an tear on your car. A while ago someone in the 88-91 Civic/crx forum posted about how they were going about 130 for a 1/2 hr straight and the engine blew. Is the saved time really worth a new engine? I think not (other than for people with Civic DX's :D *joking*)

country driving. Melt, a while back I was driving through the Napa country side on a small 2 lane road through the middle of a small town looking for a place to stop and rest when the local cop followed me through the town. My car had headers and turbo mufflers so I drove really slow, right at the speed limit of 25 mph. I didn't want to spend the night in Mayberry's finest public hotel.
On the other hand, I was driving to Temecula, another wine country area this time in Southern California to attend a training class. Driving on the 15 freeway at 85 mph in the SLOW LANE as the semi tractor trailers were OVERTAKING ME! For a week of driving that stretch, I never saw one semi pulled over for doing more than 90 mph!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Perhaps my original post was a bit too brief for the great minds here at AF. I may have come across as "stupid" when I tried to convey emotion in my post. Every time I make an intelligent post on AF, I'm ripped to shreds so I no longer put too much effort into posting here.
The men & women of the law enforcement agencies here in America have the ability to enforce the law to their discretion. This leaves some of the accountability on the shoulders of the individual officer. They have the choice to let things be, let someone go with a warning, or haul someone off to jail.
The speed limits define the maximum speed on a particular roadway. These limtis are notoriously set lower than the road allows, just to keep the "stupid" people from killing themselves. It is the officer's discretion to asses the situation... determine if someone is truely going too fast for the prevailing conditions.
In my case, the prevailing conditions allowed for speeds in excess of 130 MPH. Although I did not even approach this speed, I was still within a reasonable and safe speed. The road I speak of is desolate. It was designed to land B-1 Bombers (http://graphics.stanford.edu/~lucasp/pictures/car/edwardsafb/2edwards_b1.jpg) bombers without incident...
This was no commute during rush hour either, and I was not trying to shave 5 minutes off a drive. My driving record is impeccable, and my driving skills are excellent.
The comments about police doing there part to save our lives is the only stupid thing on this thread... Why live if life is in some kind of "plastic bubble"? Why would anyone want to live in a world that is so safe that it is boring, sterile and void of freedom? In such "safe" settings, the only activity that prevails is the degradation of fellow beings such as in Columbine. It seems that when us humans have nothing else to do, we turn on ourselves and destroy each other. The funny-looking humans get picked on by the not-so-funny-looking humans, until there is bloodshed in any way feasible. Humanity cannot be stamped out. Life cannot be shaped into the ideal society that a few people want it to be.
Yet it seems that every day, more and more freedom is being taken away, and we wonder why people walk into Airports and start shooting strangers. Yes, take away a person's ability to think on their own, to have fun, to do whatever it is they need to do, and see what happens. Our president is right, we will see more terrorism in the future, but placing more restrictions on humans isn't the answer! Perhaps the majority of AF members cannot handle themselves at high speeds. But isn't that for them to decide? Why do the talented have to be "dumbed down" for "society" to "operate". That just sounds inhumane to me... Yeah, lets make everyone on the same level as some accident-prone degenerate! Wait, that has already happened in U.S. public schools. Oh wait, I think we all know the effects of that... low test scores, rampant drug use, graduates that are dumber than shit. Now, to me that doesn't sounds good at all. So yeah, make me into this "stupid" guy who doesn't know anything and drives a car from a company that went out of business, and can't drive over a snails-pace, and looks funny, and isn't Fabio, and on and on and on... and we'll see just how "safe" the other drivers are on the road when I finally lose it from all this B.S. and snap!!! Oh, and don't just think its me... listen to the latest Eminen album lately? See his record sales? Apparently there are millions of people who are just freakin' tired of getting the short end of the stick!
In the end, there is no ideal society or Utopia... so don't try to create it. People must be left to do what they feel is right. There is no reason for government to interact except in extreme cases... I think that sending out officers to enforce "safe speeds" with an iron fist is hardly a good allocation of government time/ tax money/ manpower. While I was getting written up, I guarantee you that within a 200-mile radius someone was being beaten, someone was robbed, someone had their soul just ripped out, someone took their own life, and someone murdered their baby. But of course, my "crime" takes precendence over all those "petty" crimes.

Shit they should stop policing

- Underage Drinking (we are going to do it anyway)
- Drugs (again people are going to do them anyway)
AND PEOPLE, PLEASE TELL ME WHY THE U.S. ISNT ENTITLED TO AUTOBAHNS?!? I-5, I-10, I-80 IN SOME PLACES, AND OTHER SUCH HIGHWAYS HAVE NO REASON FOR HAVING A LIMIT!

Excelently put DMC12, and with that, I agree...I couldnt say anything more because I feel you said it all.
I think cops should enforce speed laws etc, but be more leanent on areas like the 10 where its nothing but desert and no cars. The 5 through la is a good place to go 55, not 100, but through the desert? I mean come on.

If the facts could prove that no police officer has ever had to go knock on some poor women's door and say "sorry, your son is dead....the road was dry, straight and clear"I would agree that there is such a thing as 'perfectly safe conditions'.
BOTTOM LINE
faster=more likely to die in the event of an accident
It's that simple. And if you can't accept it,and drive accordingly, then I am happy that the police are doing their best to prevent people like you from hurting people like me.

There is just too much traffic in Southern California for high speed driving. Even on the outskirts where you might think speeding is okay, it would be dangerous. Even if your skills are top notch, when you're doing just 70 mph on an open road and you suddenly come up on a disabled vehicle, I don't care if you're Parnelli Jones, it's hard to avoid a collision. When you start driving at excessive speeds, it becomes mind numbing and your reflexes will deteriorate to a slow crawl.
Save the macho speed stuff for the track, where it separates the boys from the men. Anyone can speed on the public roads, even a lowly Hyundai!

But speeding does not cause accidents, unless you're going "stupid-fast":
According to a Federal Highway Administration study "Driver Speed Behavior on U.S. Streets and Highways", by Samuel C. Tignor, Ph.D., chief of the Traffic Safety Research Division at FHA, establishing speed limits above or below the 85th percentile speed causes more accidents.
The study states: "Properly established speed limits foster voluntary compliance and separate the occasional high-risk driver from the vast majority of drivers. On the other hand, speed limits which are set artificially low tend to be ignored and misallocate resources, apprehending and prosecuting motorists driving at safe speeds. Over time this could lead to a loss of respect for all speed limits and create the impression that traffic law enforcement and the judicial system are unfair.

And that is a completely valid point.
but at 110mph and above, even on a straight clear road, if you run over something that cause your tyre to burst you = fucked. I don't car how good of a driver you are, you would be extremely lucky to get out of it.

not really, unless in a really tall vehicle, if you have good skills you shouldnt flip. Your tought this in many road handling classes. And other than that, your fucked to the extent of "I have topay for tow and then repairs" alot better than a ticket, which is so many hit and run...because even a small ticket is alot worse than major damages.

I agree that it would be difficult to handle the car if a wheel blows at 110 MPH. I also agree with T.V. that it depends on how tall your car is. I would think that a Diablo would be okay, but a Chevy Suburban would roll like 50 times! Also, it depends on which wheel... as a front wheel would grab your steering capabilites away from you, but a rear wheel would act as a drag.
Anyone care to test this out?:D

The statement was not immature, it was a result of the injustices that happen so often here is America. We seem to live in a country that uses the Constitution for reasons other than what it was written for (i.e. - removing "Under God" from our pledge of alliegence). We seem to destroy the lives of the few intelligent humans who take stands every day for freedom and justice, and reward those who murder, maim, steal and cheat. What has this country become? I can't even recognize it anymore. My Grandfather is probably rolling in his grave! He fought to defend the freedoms that people just hand over these days, and accept that their thinking will be done for them by some dumbass Big Mac Muncher (or Carpet Munching Feminazi).
At first I was appalled by Sept. 11, but now that I see our country went from a "melting pot" to "a giant toking pot" I care less and less. Maybe one day soon I will have my faith in this country restored...

:( :( wow what a mess this has become.. well i for one dont like the speed limits cause i drive fast, i dont intend to do it but i drive faster then normal. Iv'e gotten tickets for it and i have paied my dues. Breaking the law is breaking the law, wether its a stuped law or not is besides the point, there put there to try to protect the inocent, i hate it as much as the next speed racer haveing to slow down on the high way when the car leaves the slow lain just to drive slow in the fast lane. WTF is that all about.
But in the end, driveing is a privlage not a right, therefore it can be taken away from you regardless of what you think. It sux that we live in an age where most, if now all of our lifes require an automobile or some form of transportation. So being forced to drive, we are also fined, and hurded around like sheep. Of corst with out a medium ppl will drive like mad men in which ever way they want.
The Laws are there for a reson, not ever one agree's with them ever. but police that camp out waiting all day or nite for some one to pull off a minor trafice violation now that is wrong if you want to be a police to protect then protect... dont sit on your ass waiting for the regular guy to bust a california roll. How many of us have seen police cross red lights, stop signs, speed way faster then anyone else on the freeway. What kinda example is that, breaking the very law's they so unfairly enforce. So do your patrol, stop wasting my tax money sitting under a tree waiting for me to not stop for 3 seconds at every stop sign, and pull me over because i was 5 miles over the speed limit on a empti road, whiles down the street some one is getting mugged.
OHhh another thing dum asses that dont know, when you driveing on the freeway your supose to stay on the lain with the speed you can handle, and if everyone around you is going 10-15 miles over the speed limit u better be going 10 miles over the speed limit. If you didnt know driveing with the flow of trafic is also required. So all you mofo's that dont know the rules get off the road!!!!
:D :D :sun: :flash: (wow i typed alot ;) well kinda)

Update: The trial is today.
A big THANK YOU to all who have responded, whether positive or negative.
To those who know my soul (and not my DMC12 persona), please pray for a positive outcome. Jail, loss of license, and other such actions are not constructive.

I do hope you come out of this ok. Make sure the judge understands you've learned your leason and you might just get through this ok.

Sadly, the case is happening over 600 miles away from me. My responsibilities here at work did not permit me to take the day off, so its all up to my lawyer to do what is right. I prayed that she be granted wisdom, determination and strength... she'll need it. That town is very corrupt. I lived outside of it for almost two years & will never go back (will purposely drive through another state to avoid it from now on).
