'94 Dakota 4X4 Transfer Case Noises

I have a '94 Dakota 318 auto 4X4 which has some hellish noises in 4WD. Sounds like there is a gear just about stripped as it is fine until you put it under a load then it starts. Feels like it is jumping in and out of gear. Hard to describe but it is loud and is getting worse . If I put it in low and hold back on the shifter it isn't as bad. Anyone with similar experience? Thanks

CHECK THE FLUID!!! Always the #1 thing to check. Make sure that you have fluid in it. It's possible that your transfer case is going bad also.

Why is it the morons can't resist the urge to show their lack of intelligence?

I'm sorry you took it that way. But I've torn my truck apart many times, and that's one of the mistakes I learned. My tranny made bad noises, and it was because I had put fluid in it, and in the process of working on it some of the fluid leaked out so there wasn't nearly enough, and I put fluid in it and everything was fine. Just trying to help.

Also check your U-joints, because of one of your front U-joints or CV halfshafts goes bad it will do that, because there will be no resistance on the front differential because of that bad part and it will make some hellacious noises.

All tires must be the same size.
Amsiol may help.

Just pull it out and overhaul it sounds like its time. Shift forks and at least on the 231 in the ram they don’t use a bearing on the output shaft where the sprocket is for the chain huge wear point cuz is metal to metal. Also why you have it out put a new seal in the rear of the OD section to get rid of that leak if you have one and I am sure you do.
