So I got this car with a blown engine which I'll be changing out this weekend. It's a '96 metro, 1.3l automatic. The last 1/2" of the key is broken off deep in the ignition. The rest of the key works, but obviously none of the spare keys work.
How can I get that little piece out? I did think of cutting the ends off the other keys, but that's cheating. Besides, then the door locks wouldn't work.
Any ideas?

I too had the same problem -- this is what I did --I didn't have a key - took the plates off of my other Geo -- Called AAA ( you must be a gold member , only $100 and change a year ) they came and made a key off of the doors to match- AAA will have a locksmith take the piece out -- when they are buried deep you can't fish them out you have to take the ignition apart. This is how I cured it

Hey, it happened to my 97 and it happened to my friends 91 and 93. We took the ignition off which is not hard. you need a dremel. Take it to a locksmith
For some reason the keys are weak in the middle. I had plenty of new keys made so it does not happen again. take it easy!!!!!!

I did a little internet research and the best idea I came up with was to use a coping saw blade wittled down with all the teeth removed except the one on the end. The idea is to insert this thing along the bottom of the broken key so that the tooth catches the teeth of the key. Pull slowly and behold a miracle! I'll let you all know how it works out.
