I Was Reading My 4x4 Mag Today And I Saw The Compass In There And Nearly Shit My Pants!!!! I Think This Is Discracing The Jeep Name!! The Liberty Was Ok Than The Commander Which Is Allright But Nothing Compared To Cherokee And Now The Compass !!!!????? The Thing Doesnt Even Look Like A Jeep And More Like A Subaru Or Toyota Matrix. Is Dodge Putting Jeep To Shame???? Well Thats My Opinion, Whats Yours??? Oh And By The Way Anyone Seen Pics Of The 2007 Wrangler??? It Looks Like Crap But Thats A Different Story.

The only thing "Jeep" about it is the grille!!

The 07 wrangler is too long and the interior is getting too "soccer mom" suv'ish, if that's the way there going I will never buy anything newer than a TJ, but like you said this is getting off topic

Jeep was thinking "Hey look at all the goofy cars that people buy, bet we could sell one too. Hey some people even buy our other Jeeps in two wheel drive!"

I wouldn't want one and I will be surprised if it sells.

Well, I think it's economically smart on DCX's part. Let's take a look at the facts:

-Truck based SUV's are seeing a major slip in popularity
-Cute-ute's and crossover's are gaining a market share very fast
-Car based crossovers have better fuel economy
-They have a better ride
-They always improve the image of a reletively non-economical brand (such as Jeep, Land Rover, etc.)
-Crossover's are more PC than trucks

But the point remains: A car based, FWD Jeep is not a Jeep. It's a Dodge with a 7 slot grille. Which it actually is. It's based off the Dodge Nitro (Or is it the Caliber? One of them is the base for the Jeep Patriot). Mabey this is the kind of thing we are going to see in the future from Jeep.

Jeep may be alienating many of its repete customers (myself included) but find it's showrooms filled with people who would otherwise be buying a Rav4 or CRV or whatever the competitors there are.

But this move might just be very profitable, although it dilutes the Jeep brand overall. Just look at Porsche. They make stunning coupes and convertables. But come 1998, Porsche announces they will produce an SUV. The Porsche enthusiests cried treason. But just look at Porsche. They are (believe it or not) the most profitable manufacturer on Earth. The Cayenne accounts for over 50% of their sales. In fact, the Cayenne sales funded the Carerra GT project. And if the Cayenne wasnt produced, Porsche could have gone out of business. Now they are going to produce a sedan for 2009/10. What purists said was bad was still brilliant by industry standards.

We will just have to wait and see...

Look at it this way. I always thought it was stupid for those people who didn't need the 4x4 capability to buy an SUV anyway. So at least Jeep is now making something for them.

Also, Jeep has seen declining sales over the last 5 years. If they don't start making some money Chrysler will just dump them and quit making the Jeeps we actually like.

The people that bought 4x4 even know they didn’t need them are NOT going to buy a Compass.

The reason people buy Jeeps even know they are not going to use them off-road is because they see people that actually do use them off-road and want to be like them.

Please don't compare this overpiced pos to A Subaru. Subarus have slightly more powerfull 2.5L H-4's, better gas mileage, better awd system, look better, and are historically more reliable. Anyone who is looking for a utility or 4x4/awd vehicle who does any reasearch will buy A Subaru instead, unless he/she needs a bigger vehicle for space or will only buy domestic.

Well if they are actually going to go off-roading a Liberty is better then the Forester, but yeah picking a Compass an Impreza would be dumb.

That was supposed to be "but" not "buy”.

Ok. So now it should read:
"but yeah picking a Compass an Impreza would be dumb"
I made the part I did not understand bold.
However, I believe you probably you meant to insert "over" between "Compass" and "an" in your sentence.

Your right I meant that to read “but yeah picking a Compass over an Impreza would be dumb”.

Why does Jeep as a brand have to have all the same crap as the other brands? Chrysler can make all the crossover, cute ute, POS shitmobiles it wants, just don't put JEEP on them. If it weren't for the XJ, ZJ and rubicon wrangler, I'd say jeep should have just went out of business in '87 before DC got their dirty paws on it. What I really think should happen is Jeep should be sold to AM General, the surviving part of AMC.

Yep the Jeep Compass and Patriot is a Dodge just like the Trans Am was a Camaro. So what. My Patriot got me to look more at Jeep as a whole ...and what a ballsy move putting a lifetime on the engine and tranny. I city drive anyways and the Patriot works for me here. an OP was right....my Pat looks more like a jeep than the compass.

No you're Compass is nothing like the Trans Am and Camaro, they were 2 different versions of the same cool car, your's is just an other version of a lame car.

Easy now. To each his own. Just because your style choice isn't the same as someone else's doesn't mean that both yours and theirs suck - it means you both just have different tastes.

I don't like Firebirds, Camaros, Trans Ams, Liberties, Compasses or Patriots, simply because I don't fit in any of them.

It's not about style. It's the fact that the Compasse and Patriot are cars and Jeep is a suv brand.

I agree 100% that Jeep compromised their off-road line of vehicles in order to go into a certain market. I also think that since at the time of development, Jeep was owned by DaimlerChrysler and I bet the Mercedes folks had a big say so (51%) into what was developed.

We'll see if I'm right; now that D-C is no more, I'll bet that Jeep will move back towards their roots, even though they might keep one of the car-like Jeeps around - for that specific market.
