96 Taurus - Radiators Fans stay on even when car is turned off

Hello, Ive got a 1996 Taurus GL. When the car is turned off the radiator fans keep going for hours until the battery dies enough to shut them off. When you jumpo the car, they start turning again with no key in the ignition or anything. It is a problem that will happen for a while and then go away for a week and come back. I have replaced the coolant temp sensor and the fan relay to no avail. Anyone have any advice on this? I do know its not a weak battery thing as we have had that tested. Thank You very much in advance.

Which coolant temperature device did you replace? There is a coolant temp sensor for the fans and a coolant temp sender for the instrument cluster guage. They are both located in close proximity to each other near the thermostat housing.

If you have a multimeter and understand how to use it, we could point you to some items to check such as the coil for the fan relays (I think your car will have two, a high speed and a low speed relay) and the coolant temp sensor resistance at different coolant temperatures.

Also, inspect the wiring to the coolant temperature sensor and make sure you have a good connection to the sensor and that the wire isn't corroded or broken/shorted somewhere. I believe that if the sensor is disconnected it will activate the fans.

This may sound stupid, but my 87 had this same problem, very infrequently the fan would stay on, I would smack the integrated controller box which was under the radiator sight shield, that fixed it,, I think a relay would stick. I drilled out the rivets on the controller to check it out inside, all looked fine, I don't believe anything in that box was replaceable, I don't know about the newer cars, I believe it's called the ccrm now, I looked thru my book, found this info, also said pcm circuits or ect circuit and\or sensor could be issue,, maybe one of the electrical guys can help you with it:Engine Cooling Fan Control

CCRM Applications

The PCM monitors certain parameters (such as engine coolant temperature, vehicle speed, A/C on/off status, A/C pressure, etc) to determine engine cooling fan needs. The PCM controls the fan operation through the Fan Control (FC) output (single speed fan applications) or the Low Fan Control (LFC) and High Fan Control (HFC) outputs as shown in Table 1. Although the fan control (FC), low speed fan control and high speed fan control relays are normally open relays, the FC/LFC circuit is wired through a voltage inverter inside the CCRM. The voltage inverter ensures that the PCM must turn on (ground) the FC/LFC output to turn the fan off. This is done so the cooling fan will operate in the event of an open FC/LFC circuit.

I believe in 1996 the Taurus went to discrete relays for the cooling fans. My 1998 Service Manual shows discrete relays, the low speed relay is located in the engine compartment fuse/relay box and the high speed relay is located in the relay center box, left of battery, behind headlamp.
