Hi everyone im Moe, Im new to the forum and to the vr4 so forgive me if i ask retarded questions.

I just bought a 91 vr4 and had some questions about the ECS. For some reason when i press the ECS button on the dash nothing happens, no light comes on, i dont hear any noises...nothing. But when i switch between the tour and sport mode button i hear a humming noise coming from the rear of the car for a few seconds, but no lights come on in the dash. Any ideas what could be wrong? is it possible that its just the tour/sport lights are out but the whole system is still working?

A burned out bulb on teh dash would be my guess. It's a bit confusing, the ESC has a tour and a sport mode, but the tour/sport button is for your active exhaust I believe. Basically, exhaust only comes out the driverside muffler on 'tour' and both on 'sport'. The humming maybe your active exhaust valve opening/closing, but I have neither of those features, so perhaps others could chime in.

Welcome to AF. Please check out the FAQ when you get a chance, it has alot of great info for new owners/members.

Thanks for the welcome and i have read most of the FAQ page (lots of usefull information there).

I looked at it again and your right the humming is just the active exhaust switching from tour to sport, but im still concerned about the ECS is there anyway i can tell if its working or not? Ive checked all the wires for the ECS and they appear to be in good condition but since im new to this car and have never driven in a vr4 other than this one i dont know how the suspension should feel in the different modes.

I honestly don't know. I was under the impression, that when/if it's broken, a light flashes on the dash, so if there is no light...I'm guessing it's a burned out bulb. Although, I just read in another thread that another moderator, Youngvr4, has the same problem, his ECS does nothing to indicate that it is on/off. So hopefully he and a few others with that feature can chime in, because as I said, I don't have it, so my knowledge on the subject is limited.

well, if the lights are all working and your ECS is not, there should be an ECS light on telling you something is wrong.
One way to be check if its working is pull one of the caps off and have someone read voltages while you hit the button. Other than that, hit it while your driving. To me theres not a huge difference, but i can tell what mode its in just by how much i feel through the steering wheel (road texture, small bumps, etc.)
Also, its not that hard to pull the gauge cluster out and check the bulb. Takes 10 minutes.

thanks for the help guys i figured it out, searched for info on it on 3si and i found out my ECS computer was unplugged. I cant figure out why it would be unplugged though because after plugging it back in it seems to be functioning properly.

ill do my best to describe it...there was a connector unplugged from the ECS computer in the back right pannel (about as far back as the gas cap). there were two connectors goin into it but only the smaller one was unplugged.
