i have a 96 3.0 12v there is a hose running into the center of the intake on the belt side of the engine. about 6 inches from the intake on the hose there is a valve that looks similar to an egr valve. after doing a repair i was warming the car up to check for leaks and it whistled for a couple of minutes. i checked it only does it on cold starts and stops after a couple of minutes. does it need to be replaced? what is it called? if its malfunctioning how will it effect the running of my car? thanks!

Are you able to tell from the Vacuum Diagram on the hood or radiator core support which component you are referring to? Is it smaller in diameter than the EGR valve? Is it mounted to the fuel rail? I suspect you may be looking at the fuel pressure regulator, but I don't have a 3.0 12V Taurus to look at and I'm having difficulty finding a good pic in the service manual.

Any chance you could post a photo online showing the part in question?

If baldhead is not opposed to me posting it, I will, but I didn't want to give him my login info to post it on my AOL account. :)

My initial guess would be an EVAP solenoid.

Are there any connections to the device that are not visible in the photos?

I suspect way2old will know exactly what this device is off the top of his head....

Well, I looked at pictures and checked all the manuals I have for a 96 Taurus. All I can come up with is it is in the fuel return line going back to the tank. All of our Taurus vehicles have flex-fuel set up. As a SWAG, I would venture to say it is a fuel dampener valve to keep fuel from returning to the tank too quickly or to keep it from pulsating back to the tank. Wish I could help more, but I got to see the picture anyway. I looked at a 97 we have totalled and it has a similar part on it, bit it is a little smaller and has smaller lines going to it. The hose goes under the car back to the tank. So, I guess I am not much help after all. I will keep after it though. if you find out what it is, contact us so we will know too. Thanks.

I had our parts department look on the MicroCat system and the fuel system shows it to be a fuel pressure sensing valve. It should be built into the line and the line will need to be replaced. Hope this is the right part.

thanks for the info guys. that helps to be able to find out without paying a shop. As long as my car sort of tolerates my abuse i'll devote blood sweat and money to keeping it going
