Hey I have seen a ton of guys in here with B & M Shifters. I just ordered one today and I was just curious if I need anything to go along with it. I did also order a new MOMO boot and shifter knob. Should be nice when I get it. Also, is it easy to put in. There is probably a thread explaining how to put it in isn't there. Let me know.

I also just ordered one for my cav. I was wondering if you can generally put any after market shifter knob on it? It says it's meant to go with the stock knob, is that any different from after market knobs? In terms of installing?

I think the stock knob will fit ok but I could be wrong. I went ahead and spent the 130 bucks on the MOMO knob and boot just to make it look nicer. I am sure someone will let us know that already has the shifter in place.

130$ for a knob... wow

yes you need some shift boot bushings, its just a lot easier to take everything apart once and put it all one, than to do it 2 times or 3 times

for 3g eclipses, the stock knob will not fit the B&M shifter w/o modification

pretty much any aftermarket knob will work

install:
http://www.roadraceengineering.com/3g/howto/3gbmshifter-instructions.htm
and if you do get the bushings at the same time
http://www.roadraceengineering.com/3g/howto/3esshifterbushing-instructions.htm
you'll notice many of the first steps are EXACTLY alike meaning you don't have to do them twice and it will feel awesome

Road race engineering sells the bushings, they just won't ship them alone since it is a box literally ___________ that wide
______________ maybe that tall

try ordering some BG synchroshift Trans fluid or something else from them though and they can throw the bushings in the same box, they have it to you usually within 4 days

i did the install 3 or 4 times in a row cuz i didn't realize where the bushings went... also i kept fuddling, i'm a clutz when it comes to putting things together, i kno what i'm doing, just butter fingers i guess

if you have someone that knows waht they are doing, or if you have a friend, the install shouldn't take more than 20 min.

doing it yourself expect as much as 40min. or so

just be safe and take your time

Tell us what you think of your MOMO knob, because i cant rationalize spending more for the knob than for the shifter. They are real easy to install (sometimes you have to push kinda hard to get the plastic coupler over the new shifter bottom, and it can be kinda tricky to get off the old shifter, but after that its cake).

My MOMO knob was like 85 and I also ordered the boot to match it. I think if I am going to spend that kind of money on a knob I might as well get the boot for 50 to go along with it. I will let you know how it feels and looks next week after I get it on.

hate to break it to you, but you should have went to ebay for the $30 shifter. its the same as the B&M just without the name.

Wow...you guys are rough! I know I could have gone to e-bay and bought a $30 shifter without the B & M name, but I have the money to spend for the good stuff. I also know a knob is a knob, but again, I have the money to spend and I like getting the best. I am not saying MOMO is the best but its what I prefer. I have spent probably $3000 in the last month and a half on my car and I want it to look and perform the best that it can. I payed cash for my car and trust me, I can afford to put original equipment on my ride. But thanks for your opinions as I take everything in from everybody and go with it.

You guys here know your stuff and I have learned a bunch from everyone so far. If I had not found this forum I would be buying parts from Walmart or something.

Again, THANKS!!!!

If you are going for looks I can understand that knob and the shift boot, however a 30 dollar ebay short shift works just as well as the B&M shifter at about a 1/4 of the cost. That's means that there was a 100 dollars that you could have put towards something else. Oh well, the important thing is that you are happy with what you have.

You avtually dont even NEED those, its a good idea to get them, but you dont need them. You dont need anything to put your shifter in....just take the old one out, and put the new one in.

you could also change your tranny fluid to BG Synchroshift

Drodman
02-16-2006, 11:55 PM
Will that make a difference with better trany fluid? What is the advantage of doing that? Just curious... can you tell I know absolutey nothing about cars? lol

it will help out with the clunky shifting and the infamous "2nd gear grind".

Ok I installed my new shifter today and yes it was pretty easy. The only part that I had trouble with was putting that little metal clip back on the bottom of the shifter. That was a big pain in the butt. Other then that I didn't have any problems and it only took like an hour. One thing I did notice is that when I was taking things apart (the long bolt that goes across) I heard something fall but could never figure out what the heck it was. So when I was all done I looked everywhere but ended up putting everything back together the way I thought I took it apart. It seems to work just fine and it feels awesome.

One problem I am having is that I did order a new MOMO boot as well as the MOMO shifter knob. The boot is Way Way Way to big and I don't have a clue how I am going to get it to work. I think I am going to put the stock boot back on and it works just fine. Any ideas anyone???

What the hell was the purpose of getting that boot anyway? Does it look that much different than stock? A boot is a boot IMO.

Drodman
02-24-2006, 10:07 AM
Well I learned a lesson there. LOL Your absolutly right about that boot. I am going to put the stock one back on and sell this one on e-bay to some sucker like me....LOL 50 bucks for that stupid thing. The only reason I got it was to match the knob.

I guess we all make mistakes when it comes to trying to get our cars to look and run nicely.

Well, I think you helped a bunch of us out who might have thought to get that thing (Not me, but maybe some other poor bastards...lol). Your loss was all of our gain, so look at it that way, you have contributed to the massive wealth of knowledge that this forum has to offer.

Just a side note: I just installed my Energy Susp. Shifter bushings, and wow, what a difference that made. If you ever think that your shifter has any play in it, or like your shifts dont really seem crisp I would get these, wicked cheap 2.

Are you talking about the 4 bushings inside your center consol around where your shifter is?

yup those things :D they are awesome aren't they?

I only had an hour to get my short shifter in so I was in the process of taking the bushings out and replaceing them and I had problems getting the first one off. So I just put the bolts back on and I will have to do them later. But now that I know how to get everything off I should be able to get it done pretty fast. Is there a trick to making it easier? Any advise would be awesome.

ummm, no? my car is still fairly new, so doing modifications on it isn't hard since the bolts aren't entirely set in yet.. might help to get a couple screwdrivers to use... but iono for sure

you can try using one to push them out through the top, and the other to break the contact b/t the boot piece and the center metal console. dropping them would be a bad thing though, so having a person helping isn't a bad plan

if you want to make your life easier, also take off your dash part (around your cd player...the plastic piece). It will help ALOT when you try to get to the front 2 bushings.

really? i didn't find it difficult...

but then again, i've got nimble fingers...

I know with the 01 it was almost necessary to take the center piece off. The piece with the ashtray in it. That just has 4 screws and is simple to get off. I haven't had time to put the bushing in yet, but I have them and will for sure get em in soon.
