Factory tach cluster 98 3cyl

I know this has been posted about numerous times, but I still don't feel 100%sure. I have found a factory gauge cluster w/tach for my 98 3cyl HB, however it is from a 96 model w/3cyl. I see that it will physically fit, and many refer to them as "plug and play". However, the confusion I have is that in various posts (here and on teamswift.com) mention is made by some that the tach must match the motor it came from (3cyl to 3cly, 4cyl to 4cyl), in which case this one is OK so far. Then I see some folks mention that the 97 and older models won't work with the 98 and newer models because of some change with the ignition system that causes the tach not to function. A specific poster said that he had gone thru 3 or 4 pre-98 clusters and couldn't get any of them to work on his 98 or newer model. He had a 4cyl car and was using 4cyl clusters and thought that the ingition change was the issue. My question really boils down to this: did the 3cyl 98 and newer cars also get this change to their ignitions so that a pre-98 tach wouldn't work as well? Also, it appears that all the other gauges, lights, etc. will function ok- are there any issues in that department I need to know about with the change-over as well? I would imagine a 98 or newer cluster w/tach for a 3cy would be pretty scarce.
