I went out to put a new battery in my '92 firebird, and pulled on the hood release, and nothing, the handle just dangled there! Any ideas on how to open the hood without destroying it? I can't take it anywhere, because the battery is dead. Please help. Thanks in advance!:disappoin

Wow sorry to hear about your situation. Just looked at your profile Tallmadge, OH I'm about 30 miles south of you in Canton. But anyways are you sure that the hood release broke or did it just not fully operate? The cable could be stretched out seeing as it is about 14 years old. Have you tried pushing it back and forth and are you sure it isn't the hood latch? Has it ever stuck or been hard to open in the past? Hopefully this can get solved soon.

If the cable pulls the normal length and the hood does not open, try hitting the hood about 6 inches back in the center, used to do this to my brother's 87 trans am, the hood liked to stick down. If the cable is indeed broken, you will have to reach from underneath to release the hood, look at the mechanism on a wreck so you can see where everything is located. Good luck.

Thanks for all the words of encouragement and the help! As a matter of fact my boyfriend was able to climb underneath and release the latch by hand, (too cold out there for me, lol) it had popped out of the clip that holds it in place. All is well now. Thanks again to all!
