It depends on who is better at shifting. It's not the car, it's the driver that wins the race.

I dunno about the LS cobalt.. my sister has one and it's really slow. My friend has a 91 celica gt 5speed and it feels slow to me also.. I have raced a Cobalt SS Supercharged tho..

i think the cobalt carries more weight.
ive driven a cobalt coupe and compared to my 1zz it felt sluggish.
i would have to say it would be whoever can shift the fastest and drive the best. but if your engine has lost some of its power over the years you might get beat.

he has a power fc and a cold air intake. plus the celi weighs about 300lbs less than the cobalt.

So that apexi power fc must really work good huh? Is it worth the money?

Yes it works good. Yes, it's worth the money. I'm probably putting down around 170-180whp.

No way. Doesn't the GTS have 180 HP stock? and your beating cobalt SS's? Thats pretty crazy.
I not trying to say your lying, but you have to be putting out more then that. I know someone who has an 2001 Integra Type-R And he is putting out about 195 - 200 whp and he is getting low 15's - high 14's

Dude.. the ITR runs like 14.6-14.7 STOCK. Your friend can't drive to save his life. He should be running high 13's putting down 200whp. Guys with Celica GT-S's are running 13.5-14.0 putting down 175-190whp.

Yeah I guess. He told me that he is running low 15's and maybe high 14's. He said that the civic EX runs like low 17's/high 16's.
I guess his brother told me he couldn't shift...

i think you are confusing whp and bhp. bhp is what cars are measured in from the factory, so 180bhp for a stock gts. whp is power at the wheels, because some is lost before iot gets there so a stock gt-s has about 150whp. he is running 180whp so that would be equivilent to about 210-220bhp. put that in a 2550lb car and you will smoke cobalt ss's all day long.

oh wow, i didnt know there was a difference...so
WHP = Wheel horse power
and
BHP = estimated horsepower?

bhp is hp at the crankshaft after it is fresh out of the engine. the car then looses power through the drivetrain, ie transmission. this usually accounts for about a 20% loss. the factory measures hp from the engine crank while the dyno measures it at the wheels.

just my $.02 ... but i've got a 90GT 5-sp /w 111k on it. monza cat-back and custom CAI... its peppy but a stock LS cobalt with an automatic owns it. and it was my buddy's mom's car. his 01 stratus with a 4cyl and automatic can get me from a standstill but not a roll. and my other friend's alero with a v6 and automatic owns it period. lol 2004 sebring v6 auto .. owned me bad. lol i don't care though. i can out drive them all, just not in a straight line. i'll love my celi until it dies. lol

no offense but maybe it is your driving skills. cars with similar power and more weight shouldnt be beating you. especially and auto from a stand still. autos suck at launching. if anything you woyuld beat him from a stand still and he would beat you from a roll. i can understand the v6s beating you though.

more than likely. i'm guessin' its in my launch. i normally just do a 2500-3k dump in 1st leavin the line. seems to give me the best launch (to me anyways) and then the 1-2 chirp , and the occasional 2-3 chirp. any suggestions? roll ons and curves are no problem for me. just the damn straight line driving is where i get whomped.

idk but with driving theres always room for improvent so maybe with some practice you will smoke those other guys.

you should kill those cars
you should be beating things like auto rsx (not s)...auto cars, expecially ones w v-tec and vvtl-i are slow as shit copmpared to manual versions
now if you had something like a shift kit and a stall they would kick your ass, and saying automatics cant launch is false, an automatic should outlaunch a manual

i dunno, the car just seems to perform its best from 50mph on up, not that its a slouch below 50, but it just rolls and rolls and never quits pullin until the 115mph limiter kicks in... but i guess its all in learning how to properly launch my car. most automatics kick ass at launching because all you do is hold the brake, revv to 2000 (or torque conv. stall speed) and let 'er go... get consistent perfect launches every time that way. speaking of v6's as earlier mentioned, its amazing how my 140~hp celica can keep up with my buddy's 200+hp sebring (only because they both turn off @115) but town driving is a diff. matter. lol seems that v6's torque helps the car more around town. its really hard to mess with other 4-cylinders that can revv much higher than my car and make the same amount of horsepower. my first gear is basically spent at 35 (revved out). 2nd will pull to ALmost 60 (again, revved out) and 3rd, i don't like taking it past 80 because the engine just sounds so labored... 4th to 100-105, and take 5th to 115... lol i just wish the engine had a lil more oomph in the top end because i know it would help. the new(er) celicas (GTS's) make all their power in the 7000-8000k range... which i like. izzy motors are cool. torqueless, but cool. lol the 'ol 5sfe makes all the power its gonna make by 5k rpm. which is typical of an undersquare motor (bore is smaller than the stroke...) IMHO the 3SFE was more fun because at least it wasn't spent by 5k rpm, (even though it had less power) torquey cars are fun, but they just aren't REALLY fast. that's just my opinion, maybe i'm wrong. I have always been a toyota fan, and always will be. maybe in the coming year i'll see what's involved it giving it a little "boost" and see what comes of that. i have a friend with a turbocharged beta-swapped hyundai accent, with full motor work, and another friend with a turbocharged ford taurus SHO, again, with full engine work.. the accents about ~250hp and the taurus is somewhere in the low 400's (both at the wheel) so at least i'll have some good advice and someone to help me build it... lol

in a manual u can take it to 4-5k and drop the clutch, try that in an auto and you will be looking for a new tranny. plus clutches are much more efficient at transferring power than torque converters. thats why a manual can squeel the tires on the takeoff and a auto cant. i doubt a stock auto will outlaunch a stock manual anytime.

good point on the 4k-5k dump. but its also really hard on your final drive... axles... etc. i know because i have blown the manual tranny out of two different cars... a toyota camry with a 3SFE, and a toyota tercel with a 3E.
and about a 4k-5k dump in a automatic ?
lol... some newer cars have a feature to prevent you from doing that... i know, i've tried. you can't revv over 4k in N or P while sitting still, and if you click it in any gear, it cuts fuel or spark, slows the engine to about 1000rpm and goes into gear, then turns the fuel or spark back on. really saves the tranny! at least that has been my experience in v6 powered GM cars... and a few fords too.
anywayz, i've just come to the conclusion that a celica is not a racecar, and its all about technique. lol
