Anything stainless is the way to go. IMO, I'm not a fan of Flowmaster. But many are.

many do not like the flowmaster but for the price i could not beat it for the sound, but stainless magnaflow or borla will last longer but cost more too.

if you dont want it really loud but you want less backpressure, make sure to go with turbo mufflers and NOT glasspacks. turbo mufflers wont have that cruddy farty loud tone to them like glasspacks often do and they wont be as loud, and they still are much less restrictive over a stock system.
if you want more power, i would do internal improvements well before exhaust improvements. with the stock setup you probably have now, the benefits from a good exhaust will probably be minimal, as the engine isnt flowing enough to really need it in stock form, most likely anyways. you might see a 5 or 10 horsepower gain, so you might actually feel a slight difference, but internal mods will help much more, although most would completely kill mileage lol...

I have the stainless magnaflow on my 5.3 and I love it. It has more of a race tone to it but is still deep sounding.

Here's another suggestion, though I don't think they have a cat-back system. I have a Flo-Pro FP-747 that has a really nice sound, but is not harsh at highway speeds. I have a single-in single-out; inline with the stock system. You can listen to sound samples on different applications on their website at http://www.flopro.com

I just bought the Flowmaster 17310 Cat Back kit. Fits 99-02 Silverado Ex. Cab. Short Bed Dual out the rear.
It sounds good, but isn't loud. Says improves gas mileage and HP, but have only had it installed for a week so not to sure yet.
If your looking for something that's not much louder than your stock exhaust and sounds good, this is what I recommend. The bonus is you could drive past your grandmother's house at 3am and not have to worry about waking her up...lol

I have the flowmaster 40 series cat back single in dual outs. Love the sound. Some people say it resonates inside the cab too much, but to me it's only at the end of 2nd gear into 3rd. As for gaining mileage, I gained a whole tenth of a mile. Then when I had 285s mounted, I lost the tenth back. Oh well.

I have a flowmaster, and as I've said before, I hate it. Its too loud both inside the truck and out. And I feel its killing my power some.

I would recommend removing the muffler and stick in a y-pipe for your dual exhaust. That is what I did.. Sounds awesome! better than flowmaster! Not too loud but can be heard while driving. PLus you do not get that "in-cab" reverb sound like most exhaust systems have. I took it to Midas. PLus removing the muffler does not effect your emissions. I also have not noticed in loss in back preasure.. inface I seem to have gotton more torque and HP from it.
