Air bag light on

Hello,

I`ve just joined your Froum. I have a 97 GP S/E with the 3800 engine. The air bag light has come on and won`t go off. I`m a ford tech and have no aftermarket testers to check it with. Is there a common problem and fix or not? I can`t believe that the Air bag itself is no good as the car only has 54k on it and has never had a accident and I bought it new. What a pleaseure to drive!!! Any help or idea is welcome and i`m looking forward to helping other out as well.

Drop down your font size, please, anyway no other way but to scan this with a SIRS functional scanner for codes. Welcome to AF by the way.

Sorry about the font....now...I`m going to find a freind with the scranner but was just wondering if there were any common problems I should look at . I know Ford has tons of coomon problems we always see almost daily. Same as this example: trans problems in G/P. ?? I`m running great so I`ll keep on movin, just wondered if others have had this problem and what it was to coorect.

Hey Mr. Fixit, I have a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix FTP with and airbag light on. Did you ever find out what your problem was? I believe it may be a bad sensor as the car was never in an accident. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Craig

Welcome to AF!!

You should take the car to a mechanic with a scanner capable of checking air bag codes. Do it asap since the airbags may not work in an accident if the light is on.

I`m a FORD Mechanic. I had a freind scan the car with his scanner and we got a code B1015 ( pass. side high resistance) We found a TSB onthe code as well. The tsb is 83-90-10 and it said to install a pigtail in series with the pass air bag. The part # is 16758256. Iwas wondering if anyone knew how to get to the back of the bag as I have no manuals on this, but I do know how to deactive the system to work on it. Thanks for any help

For driver's side, look on back of the airbag assembly on the steering wheel. You'll see two leaf spring type clips with a screw holding them on. Remove screw and carefully pry out clips. Once removed pull airbag forward and it should remove. Even if system is deactivated work from the sides only.

Passenger Side Airbag:

The SM says to remove the instrument panel carrier. Disconnect passenger side air bag module pigtail harness from instrument panel harness clips. Remove fasteners from airbag module and then remove module from the dash crossbar beam.

I was wondering if someone knew the process to remove the instrument panel carrier that I need to to get to the Pass Air bag? I have removed tons of FORD dashes...so I know what I`m doing. I just need the process for the G/P Dash.
