gas milage in the real world

every body knows the epa hubbub about the estimated miles per gallon. its always wrong. so lets try an experiment. state your car, any added info you want and what kind of milage you get (you can say city, or highway or just a general thing) ill say me last 2 cars just because of how remarkable my laser was

my 90 plymouth laser (1.8 with a stick) on 87 octane 2 octane boosters : a serious 50 mpg. (im not kidding) this was after i returned it to stock, the last owner bent 3 rims and i had to run 13"s for a while, but this was after i put 14"s back on.

and my 03 zx2 < my baby. (2.0 auto) between 26-30.
and my cougar.... dunno yet.

2000 S-10 Automatic single cab, short bed p/u. with the 2.2L 4 cyl 2wd. i've noticed vartiations from 14-18.5MPG. I do all city driving. I use the Midgrage "87" Octane, K&N Cold Air Intake, Ravin z55 exhaust. EPA is 19city 25-26 HWY. Also I'm going to add that I live at 5500ft elevation Aurora, Colorado.

I drive a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe w/ 2.4L engine. Only modification is a WeaponR secret intake. Transmission is a 4-Speed Automatic. Driving is split 50/50. The car gets 19-21mpg in the city, and 21-26mpg highway on 87 Octane. The EPA says 19 in the city & 26 on the highway w/ 87 Octane.

Right around 15mpg sitting in traffic twice a day 5 days a week for b/w 35 minutes to an hour.

My biggest question is why the hell do cars built 10+ years ago that got 50+ mpg, and yet the cars out now are just pushing 60mpg?

and those 10 years ago were using all motor, none of this electric or hybrid assisted crap. but i do wonder the exact same. especially considering the tech has to have grown since then.

92 civic dx..home-made intake and RS*R GTII exhaust. I'd say about 35-40 on the highway. I drive it for all its worth around town so about 20 city i guess. It only takes $20 to fill it up from bone dry. It only need gas every other week, too. I guess the hour-long zero to sixty is worth it...almost.

'92 half ton reg cab Silverado, 350 TH700-R4, 4 wheel drive I average 13.5. 75% highway at 65 mph the rest is city driving.

Is there a reason why you get better mileage in the summer? Because during the summer i always got 15, and on one tank i got just under 18 mpg with it. Someone clue me in here?

My last car (91 CRX Si) was rated for 33 mpg highway, and with just an exhaust and 204,000 I was able to get 45 mpg once, and could consistently get 42-43 mpg all highway.

A colder temp. means denser air, denser air requires more fuel to be at the proper ratio so your computer adjusts accordingly. That's why you have more power in the colder weather also.:2cents:

Edit: Also cooler air is the reason we ice our intakes before a race, and the reason for intercoolers.
Cooler air = more power.

because all that new technology has been going into making more horsepower is what i would guess. nowadays you rarely see a car that has under 200 horsepwer unless it's a small, cheap, economy car which of which there really aren't many new ones coming out.
we are in the midst of a horsepower war. srt is running rampant on every car it can get it's hands on. even jeep can't escape it's ever reaching grasp. a grand cherokee that does 0-60 in 4.8 seconds?!?!? AMG is just ridiculous, making engines with over 600hp and over 700 lb-ft of torque and stuffing them into every top end car it can get it's hands on. bmw is bringing out cars with 500hp. the list goes on and on, but you get the idea.
so that's my answer. the horsepower wars are the reason cars don't get better gas mileage
