testing and cleaning EGR

In my Haynes manual, it says to test the EGR diaphragm by pushing on it slightly. It says it should move, mine doesn't. In previous posts, we saw that the exhaust gas pathways get very carboned up.

What I am wondering is, if the diaphragm won't move, could it be plugged with carbon? Is there an easy method to clean all this carbon out of the metal parts? Is the EGR one of those parts that one should expect to replace several times throughout the life of the car?

The best way to test a egr valve is not by pressing on the diapham.

Instead while at an idle, apply vaccum to the egr valve, your rpms should drop noticably.
