Srt-8 an V6 models...?!

NYPD adds muscle to street fleet

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

February 10, 2006

The muscle car perhaps best known for outrunning a hapless sheriff in "The Dukes of Hazzard" will soon have a new role in New York City: police cruiser.

The NYPD plans to buy 15 police versions of the 2006 Dodge Charger for a pilot program that will begin this summer, officials said yesterday. If the sporty four-door sedans pass inspection, they eventually could replace hundreds of squad cars in the NYPD's 3,000-vehicle patrol fleet, now dominated by Ford Crown Victorias and Chevrolet Impalas.

"The fact that the NYPD would consider the Charger is an honor," said Kevin McCormick, spokesman for DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group.

NYPD officials said the highway unit will test drive 10 Chargers - five marked, five unmarked - featuring V-8 5.7-liter Hemi engines. The rest of the cars will have V-6s and hit city streets in the five boroughs.

With the Charger, officers can protect, serve and burn rubber: In a recent analysis by Michigan State Police, Chargers equipped with the V-8 had the quickest acceleration (6.52 seconds to 60 mph) and fastest lap time (150 mph) of any police vehicle tested.

Leonard Lesko, the NYPD's director of fleet services, said with so many flashy foreign cars on the road, speed matters.

"The car that does 110 mph doesn't do it anymore," said Lesko, who joined the department in 1973, when the Plymouth Fury was the NYPD's car of choice.

The price of the Chargers was still being negotiated. But a company Web site lists the civilian model's starting price at $22,995. Modified police models - outfitted with fortified front seats, no rear-door handles and heftier brakes - typically are sold to law enforcement agencies at a discount.

The department prefers to use a mix of models and manufacturers to avoid grounding the fleet in case of a recall.

The Charger raced onto the muscle car scene in 1966. Over the next several years, it made an impact on the stock car racing circuit and on television, starring as the General Lee, an orange 1969 model, in "The Dukes of Hazzard" series, which premiered in 1979.

But its popularity had waned by the late 1980s, as did that of the Plymouth Fury and Dodge Coronet, once police favorites.

Chrysler rolled out a revamped version of the Charger last year, including a police model aimed at capturing a share of a market monopolized by the Crown Vic. It was pitched as the car that would "put 340 horses under the good guys' hood."

The part that gets me is this.."The car that does 110 mph doesn't do it anymore," said Lesko, who joined the department in 1973, when the Plymouth Fury was the NYPD's car of choice.Come on who are they kidding, the department does not need to shell out any unnecessary money for such cars especially since with the traffic we have here in NYC. No car can ever attain that speed here.

Good point. Not much use for those in Manhattan traffic. I could see them being useful in LA though with all the freeway chases.

cops should develop some Mad Max-esque car;
one with a huge blower sticking out of it.

a blower so damn huge it takes up 3/4 of your rear view mirror.

Firstly two spirits, didn't know you lived in NYC, im not to far.

The way I see it, i think it will improve response time. Of course faster cars would help. And maybe that's why they are settling for a few V6s with a mix of the 5.7 liter V8s. The V6s are used for the crowded areas such as Manhattan. And there are some places where you can really, really really speed in NYC. I recall one night, around 12 or 1 in the morning, we were coming back from Long Island going on a highway through Brooklyn in my dads 745, because I remember seeing the tip of lower Manhattan on my left. I was trying to see if I could find it on Google Earth, and I think it was 278, before, or maybe after the Battery Tunnel. I remember it because, the highway was a causeway bridge and it was only 6 lanes across with very small shoulders, so there was practically no where for the cops to hide: it was like a freakin runway. My uncle who was in the car with me said that "this highway is known for people who speed...there's no where for cops to hide so people come up with their sports cars and really open them up," as my dad was doind around 95 on it.

I think that the V8s are meant for the night for highway patrol, and faster response time while the V6s stay on the streets.

in addition, at least they're moving away from those problematic POS Fords. And i'm sure this was also considered after that design recall on the Ford Crown Vics, where if rear ended, it would ignite the gas tank which was too exposed and would cause the car to explode, that happened a while back, as I remember on the news.

Edit: Google Earth says it's where the Belt and the Gowanus, or the BQE (same thing?) come together heading north.

Yes they do.

and not many cars seem to out run camaros that hit 160. Therefore it would be pointless to have Chargers in L.A.

Yeah alot of cities have Copmaros.. when you see one of those, I think its pointless to run. They run 11s on the track I think or something around there with nitrous.
