I have a 1997 silverado ext 4x4 5.7 beautiful truck 190k, transmission works like a new one except for a 2 or 3 second delay when shifting into drive or reverse. Any ideas? thanks

Check the tranny level, in park, level surface, at operating temp.

i have the same truck you do, and mine does the same thing, a couple second delay and then it shifts, if you have not changed the fluid i would highly recommend it, and probably throw some lucas transmission treatment in there for good measure (that is what i have done), also make sure you are letting the engine run for at least 30 seconds before you take off and longer in the cold.

thanks for the replys, any preference between lucas trans treatment and seafoam treatment? both are suppose to be good products, thanks

sea foam has a good brand also, i really don't have an opinion on which is better or not, i would read the description, see which one lowers the operating temp. of the transmission fluid, as a rule of thumb every 20 degrees you lower the temp of the fluid you double the life of your transmission or the fluid or both, (i think the rule is correct, i have been drinking beer, and it has been a while since i have taken the transmission course) but anyway the more you lower the fluid temp the longer it is going to last, (within reason, a temp that is to cold won't let the transmission get to operating temp and that will do damage to because it was not designed to operate at temps that are to low. anyway hope this makes sense, if not let me know and i will post again when i am sboawer.

what would be the coolest a trans should run temp wise?
my 94 1500 is a plow truck. when I bought the truck a few years back it only had the trans cooler in the Rad. I put on an external cooler run in line after the rad cooler. one from a later model chevy truck. and have not put my trans temp gauge in the truck yet. just lazy, I guess.
I have not thought about it running to cold!
thanks Joe

My 97 K1500 5.7, tranny temp gauge is from B&M and it goes from 100 to 160 to 220 in the white numbers and yellow 220 to 260 then red above 260.
Pulling a 7000 lb fifth wheel trailer it generally is in the 160 to 220 (correction) range.

like previously stated your transmission temp is going to depend on what you are doing, plowing or heavy towing is definatley going to increase the temperature. i don't do that much heavy work with my truck, and i am in the process of moving so all my books from school are packed up but i believe 200-220 would be normal operating temp, but anything below 200 i would consider to cold, but like i said i am going off memory, and all my books are packed up, maybe try a google search or ask jeeves that should give you more specifics.

Normally, you run the external cooler on the return line from the tranny and then go the radiator cooler. Since it always runs thru the rad after the external cooler, it makes sure that tranny fluid is close to the radiator temp.

The seafoam trans tune is an additive that is designed to clean the clutches and valve body. You add it then run the truck through all of the gears for about 10 min then change the filter and fluid. After the service then add lucas or the treatment that I like is the red bottle Lubegard.
