Hey there,

I have a 2002 Grand Am GT1, and I noticed that when it is first started up it seems like it has a ticking noise in the engine that lasts until it gets warm and then it goes away and my car is very quiet. Any ideas about what this could be. Hydraulic lifters maybe? Is this a huge deal?

Thanks

Welcome to AF!!

Ticking on start-up is common. It can be caused by a lifter or you may even be hearing the injectors ticking. As long as it goes away when warm and it doesn't get worse don't be too concerned.

One thing to check though is to make sure you have the proper grade and level of oil in the car. Sometimes too heavy an oil can cause the lifters to tick especially if the temperature is cold. Make sure you have oil specified in the owners manual for your model car.

welcom to AF blackhawkmedic. The lifters do tick somewhat when the cars first started in the cold.
It should stop though within a few minutes, or less.
Unless its like 0 or below where you liv.
If it lasts for several minutes may want to go to a thiner weight of oil.
You using 10w 30?
The car calls for 5w-30, it wouldnt hurt to use that if the ticking continues for extended periods during winter months.

Hey,

Thanks for replying so quickly. I'm not even sure what kind of oil was put into my vehicle because I JUST bought it. Do you suggest I just change the oil to something else just to be sure? Thank you!

Funny you mention below zero.... my doors were frozen shut this morning from the snow last night..

If they were stuck then coat the weather stripping with some Armor All or STP son of a gun. The silicone will not allow the water to adhere and the doors should open freely. Also spray the lock mechanism with some lithium grease.
