Water Leak...Where?????

OK the time has come...I thought that the slight musty smell in the GAGT was part of the normal aging process, I've been in a lot of older cars that had that vague musty smell. So when I got in the GT a few weeks ago and it had that slight smell I really didnt give it much thought. Well I should have given it a lot of attention. My wife came home yesterday from work (she has been driving it regularly) and she said the smell is so bad that she was concerned for her health. A very good point.

My question is this: Of all the places for water to get in, where are the most common, A/B/C pillars?/windshield ? back window? I am looking for suggestions as to where to start, it deems that the water is laying under the front floor carpet, I thougt it may be from the snow but we have not had enough to but the blame there. any of your suggestions will be considered.

Thank you for your help
Dan

Pull the carpet up toss any wet padding that is under the rug, it forms mildew and it cannot be cleaned, with the r/s stripped out you will need to water test the car, someone ( you I guess) inside while water is sprayed on the r/s of the car look for where the water comes in. Remember water finds it's own level, point of entry may not be where it runs into the cabin. Baking soda on the carpet should deodorize it unles it has already had mildew form.

finding leaks can be a PITA. you condenser unit under there may hav a pluged drain, might giv that a look too.

I'll see what else I can dig up on this Dan

If you have a sunroof, check the drains, they do clog up with gunk after a while, also check the plastic trim in front of the windshield, if thats cracked or warped its possible water is running in there, mine did after I had the windshield replaced. Another place to check is under the center console, follow the hump as far forward as you can reach, see if the carpet is wet, if thats the case then the condenser drain is probably plugged. Look under the hood, see if the drain hose is melted (it is very close to the exhaust on my 95) or anything is blocking it. Good luck, leaks suck.

Thanks Maxwedge, XI, and Ski, I appreciate the input, Ski I dont have a roof but I appreciate the hump info, it is a posibility, the wife said she went into the consol box and the smell was overwhelming. When I checked the other day the carpet was wet on the driver side and like max said water will find the low point. I wll take the advice and start with the cowling at the wipers. I tend to get leaves build up in that area.

As for the drain tube I have ruled it out because the A/C has not worked in about a year. I have that to work on next. My big concern is that when I get her in the garage it will be warm enough that if I have a cracked seam somewhere that expands in the cold it will close up when the body warms up, something like that will take forever to track down.

I'll let you know.
Thanks,
Dan

Well guys, I think I found the problem, The seam that is behind the left front shock tower, right by (in my case)the resivior for the clutch fluid, and runs down the firewall by the rubber cover for the axle into the wheel well. I put my probe to it and it just flaked off and the under side had a coating of rustand I could just about put the point of the probe about a half an inch under the flange. That was all I could find and I pretty sure that is where it was because of the water pattern inside under the dash.

All in all it wasn't that bad.

later,
Dan
