Howling noise

I have a 1996 blazer I have had this noise since I bought it 2 years ago I replaced the bearings and seals and brakes in the rear , put a new hub assembly on the right front , rotated tires it still sounds like its coming from the right front and it as I slow down and get ready to stop it it gets kind of a whining sound . never did anything with front brakes always thought it was more seroius then that does bad roaters and pads make noise . I would appreciate some opinoins Thanks

i have a 97 had the same problem a couple or years ago. the front diff 4x4 actuator was not completely disengageing the front diff. I noticed it most when I would slow down. the actuator is located below the battery. I actually rerouted mine next to the battery so it is easier to service. tug on the cable a couple of times and work it back and forward. I ended up replaceing my actuator and the vacum lines a few months after the problem and it has been fine ever since.

well, I put a new Vacuum switch on and a new actuator, still have the noise , i notice when I test drove it I made a hard left circle it was smooth, when I made right hard circle it was really choppy Like it feels when you have the 4x4 on but it was off, going down the road straight and you put it into 4x4 its queiter and shut 4x4 off it gets louder right away Any Ideas, Thanks

Have you checked the front hub assembly?? Sounds like it could be bad bearing in the left front wheel, which means replacing the hub assembly.

I have replaced the right front 1 year ago its sounds like its coming from the right ,but you think it could be the drivers side. Thanks again

When you turn to the right it puts all the weight on the left side, causing it to "howl". That is why I am suggesting it may be the left side.

I experienced this too, it turned out to be a worn vacuum line. The line was rubbing against the front driveshaft!

Thanks for the input, is there a good way to check the vacuum line on mind there is a plastic covering over it, I follwed it to the back of engine then lost it, I see the three hoses that come off the Vacuum switch but cant see were they go Thanks Bob.

Check the front axle actuator cable. This connectes between the actuator and the axle. If it does not move freely, the spring inside the vacuum actuator is not able to release the front axle when you shift back to 2wd.
The cable is cheap and easy to replace.

I am getting a little confused, so are you guys saying that is staying in 4x4 and not going back to 2w if I jack the front end up what should I check Thanks

I jacked the front end up ,there really was no noise from the hubs, the the cv joints were solid ,I am going to jack it up again today , is there a way to see if the 4x4 is engaged or not ,also is there bearings on the diff, where the axle goes in looks like the seal is leaking bad on drivers side , could that be my problem , I don`t here any thing when its up ,is there a way to check that, I appreciate all your help, thanks

I was trying to check the vacuum lines but have not found anything yet , I did fine a vacuum hose that was tied down to the tranny dip stick with a cap on it does any body know what that could be Thanks

That would be the trans vent line tied to the trans dip stick tube put there to keep water out of it. If that CV boot has split and all the grease came out or was washed out that CV axle is probably the noise source, if not now it soon will be so change it out - about $75 for a rebuilt axle. You never said how many miles this has on it but if a 96 look at the U-joints on the rear driveshaft. Check the gear oil in the front diff now! Yes there are bearings and seals in both sides and the pinion. Brakes are usually more of a grinding noise when really bad. Remember that noise sources are often coming from other areas than they seem to be (pain to find).

Would that vacuum line problem affect an '87 Blazer S10? All the discussion has been about newer trucks but my '87 is making a noise like that and it makes me worry... :uhoh:
