Thanks to everyone reading this!!!
I have searched this forum high and low, and this place is my new savior!!!
I have a 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 5.2, Quadratrac.
Now, I have experienced a "whining" noise up front. As many people on here, i have replaced both hubs, the driveshaft (thinking bad cv??) and its still there. it has the same symptoms as everyone, does it when you gas it and stops when you let off. it seems that everyone's conclusion is the pinion bearings. i happen to be a "backyard mechanic" but i have never messed with front ends. can someone help me through this process? thanks

Have you replaced the gear oil in the front end? I'd start there and be sure to use synthetic oil. I had mine changed and it took a while for my front end to break in. Every time I took a sharp turn there was a grinding noise. Finally I took my Jeep to a parking lot and did figure eights while in 4WD low and it quieted down.

I had the same noise in the front diff. on my 97. It was the carrier bearings. The Jeep stealer wanted $1200 and three days to fix. Found a local shop that specializes in rear ends (Randy's Ring & Pinion). $529 and one day. That was 58k miles ago and no new noise. If you haven't done a differential before, I would leave it to the experts. Proper shimming and gear preloads are something they should handle if you want the diff to run quiet.
