Strange transmission

:screwy:
My son just picked up a 72 Chevy pickup with a 283 in it. I know someone has changed the engine since the engine is from a 60's car according to the casting numbers. Anyway, it is backed by a 3 speed manual transmission, wherein lies the question. The two bottom bolts screw in from the bell housing to the trans and the two top bolts screw from the trans to the bell housing. This is the first one I ever remember seeing like this. I thought they all screwed from the trans to the bell housing. Anyone else ever seen one like this and have any idea what it came out of?
