Generally, an AIr resonator is to lower the engine noise at Hi RPM... (I think so) I don't know much about malibu.. my father have one V4 2.4 DOCH small mod. in summer he take of the resonator and fix something with the sensor that can't go dizzy and he win some hp...

it won't mess with your gas milage. if you remove it, it will allow the engine to breath better...which does help.

it's installed to remove the sucking noise that the engine has when runing. you'll hear it if you take it off. some people get nervous (the ones who don't strive for performance) when they hear odd noises coming form under the hood.

it won't hurt anything to remove it. you may want to replace the whole air filter box anyway. just swith it out with a cone filter. try to block the most engine bay heat as possible

yeah i took everything off my stock intake and replaced it with a cone filter and some 3" tubing gets a little more power and is a LOT louder, sounds almost like a new muffler, i was warned about that but did not believe how loud it would be, just goes to show that the stock air box is also used to keep the engine noise down, like you guys said
