How many of you have an XJ (any year) with over 200K miles on the original engine?
My '98 currently has 110K miles on it. It was formerly a Green Forest Service vehicle that I got from the GSA auction for $3400 w/78K miles on it. I am wondering what kind of miles I can expect to get out of this engine.
Since I purchased it, it has only had Mobile 1 in it and it has never had to be topped off between oil changes (6K miles).
In a couple of weeks i'm sending it in to get a new belt, all new hoses and anti-freeze flush and fill. I would do it myself, but our new house doesn't have the garage built yet.

In my experience, the engine and tranny (knock on wood) are sound. It's a lot of other things that eventually catch up to you. I've had to replace the front and rear wiper motor assemblies, the radiator (probably not too uncommon for a 92), and a few other things. Overall, I've heard a lot of people comment in this forumn with positive reactions, but then again, you're asking a biased group. :-)

the 4.0l i6 is a really good engine as far as how long you'll be able to depend on it

My friend has a 91 4.0l that has over 200k on it and it's still really peppy

My 94 ZJ has 126k on it and doesn't burn any oil, leak, etc.

GREAT engines if you maintain them.

These engines are known for getting noisy, with mild piston slap (especially when cold) and mild bearing thumps, as they build mileage. Normally, most engines make such noises when they are getting worn out.

However, lots of people still get up to an extra 100k miles on engines with such noises.

I have an '87 with 171,000 miles on it, you probably heard of the snow storm in new jersey last night and tody: Today was the real test, the hardest since I have it(3 years) OOOHHH, you should've seen it plowing snow without a snow plow!!Hey, I'm proud to have it.Engine never opened, no leaks, no burning oil, easy to fix(if it ever breaks down) what can I say?.. They are great. Just keep on the manteinence(oil change, trans. fluid and differentials) etc. I met this guy who has one(87) with 498,000 miles,More coments????

I have an '87 with 172,000 miles on it,it does not burn any oil, no leaks and more important;no engine noise. I'm about to change the timing chain. Tha's all. What can I say?. Great engine and drive train. Just keep on the maintenance.you don't even need to be a mechanic to fix a problem. Get the"HAYNES REPAIR MANUAL" for your car's year .. you have a great car.

my 98 has 138000 miles on it, no problems, no leaks, nothing. I think it runs better than my mom's '02 legacy... My brothe has a '93 grand cherokee with 124000 the only problem we ever had with that was a bad cps...

My 1989 jeep cherokee pioneer has over 210,000 miles on it and the only problems i have is with the transfer case and a mild case of not starting in the rain. both not too bad and easily fixed.

I was going throuhg the junk yard yesterday, There was a 93 cherokee. She was hit in the back, it was junked I'm assuming because it was wrecked, so It probably still ran, It had 314,000 on the odometer. if that gives you a hint about the long term reliability of these engines.

I got a 94 with 245k on it still peppy and going strong at this point i am more worried about the drivetrain failing than the engine :)

My 89 cherokee is about to turn over 240,000 miles. Original engine, 5 speed trans, and clutch without any rebuilds or overhauls. No serious problems yet.

95 Cherokee Sport, 147k, still running like new.

The 4.0 is a great engine. I'm partial to the I-6 engines built by most American automakers. It's too bad they've all dropped the good engines they used to make. (Ford 300 I-6, Jeep 4.0 I-6, etc.)
