Engine noise and vibrations.

I recently purchased a new 1999 Galant with 90k miles on it, automatic. Whenever I shift it into gear (drive or reverse) the engine makes a terrible noise and shakes the car a little bit while in low rpm's, once I get going however, the ride is much quieter / smoother. Any ideas on what's wrong?
