Hi, the head gasket on my girlfriends clio has gone (leaking oil). I know this engine has got wet liners, so what I need to know is, can I replace the head gasket without disturbing the liners seals when the head is removed, as this will mean an engine rebuild which I really do not want to do. Any advise please apart from "take it to a garage" thanks.

Haynes sez: You're fine taking the head off as long as you swivel the head off carefully so as not to disturb the liners. Don't turn the crankshaft while the head's off (it'll move the liners) unless you've bolted bits of metal across the block over the liners to hold them in place.

HTH.

Hi mate... thanks for reply, but have already done it. The only thing I had to do was make up a couple of clamps to hold the liners down. Although the liner hights of Number 2&3 liners were about .01mm/.02mm below the given tolerance, so I'm not sure how long the head gasket is going to last. Just did not have the time or equipment to do an engine rebuild, as it's better to remove the engine to do this.
