I cant stand squeeks and rattles. They drive me up the wall!
If there is something squeeking , rattling or any other strange noise - Me and a friend of mine go on a search and destroy mission and keep at it until what ever is causing it is found and fixed.
A few years ago i was getting a high pitched shrill sound like finger nails on a chalk board. We searched for over 5 1/2 hours until we finally found what was causing it.:banghead:
We had the car on jack stands - we were inside and out - under the hood - everywhere. finally we decided to drive around and find spots in the road that made the car do what ever was causing the shrill sound.
after we found a stretch of road that replicated the sound - i drove slowly with the window down while my friend walked along side the car listening, trying to get an idea where it was coming from.
After all of this searching and fuss we found the problem at last! It turned out to be a pointed tip bolt that mounts the hood hinge to the fender.
it just happened that the point was just barely touching the metal support below causing all of the trouble.
To fix it we simply removed the bolt and filed the point off and that was the end of that problem.
It's really aggrivating that something so small can cause all of that trouble & headaches

I have an 89 in the 170,000k range and other than a little squeak from the back hatch(need to repair the pull down so it closes tight, that'il fix it), the driver door screaching while opening/closing(need to replace hinge-pin), and the lockrods clanking in the doors(need to replace those mesh pad things) there are very few noises... Except for the oversized 3-way 6 by 9's I installed!!!:ylsuper: :evillol: :ylsuper: Cant seem to get those things to stop making so much noise.lol
As for the noise from the springs...I would say it is time for a new set of pads for em.

nothing just get tired of hearing my hatch squeke at every pebble i run over
For hatch squeke, try some white lithium grease on the hinges and lock mechanism. Also take a look at the striker pin and see if it shows any signs of wear, if it does you can try wrapping it with a thin layer of black electrical tape.
If that doesnt fix the problem, then it could be caused by weak hatch supports, or if the weather stripping is broken down(mabe leaking?) you could replace it...the weather stripping also acts as a cushion.
If non of that does it, you can always take off the trim panel in the back and try lowering the locking mechanism by just a tad.
After that, Im all out of ideas:)

Is it the plastic trim around the t-tops or the t-tops themselves?
Have you taken a look at the metal pins that come out of the tops to secure it to the car or the holes they slide into to see if they are worn? Are they greased?
Do the seals leak at all? Have the weather strips become soft/weak? It might be that the weather strips just arent putting enough pressure on the t-tops so they are able to move slightly...thats why they are quiet when the windows are up, they are pushing the t-tops up and holding they there so they cant move...I think that might be your answer.

pretty much the only thing i found that works. is to completely disassemble the interior of the car, and put it back together with a little black electrical tape around the threads of all the trim screws. and new plastic retainers on all the panels. of course it also dosnt hurt to use a few extra screws to hold plastic panels together that buzz. i did it to my RS and it never made a peep. as i put the IROC back together im gonna do the same thing.

I discovered it to be a soda can rattling against her cup holder. Problem solved!

I think its hilarious when some yahoo comes around and says "my engine sounds funny, whats wrong with it?" And expects you to know right off the bat...
One time when I was working at Boykin Automotive someone came up to me and said that word for word and I just looked at him and said "Well if your engine makes you laugh then eather you have a weird sence of humor or you need to find the fart machine hidden under your hood."
As it turned out, he had a large deposite in his #4, after it was disolved, he didnt think the bill was funny :iceslolan

my whole car feels rickety right now, not just the interior. its been drinving kinda funny for bout a month now. i dont know if a sway bar broke or what. i havent looked at it yet. this summer, when i get some money, im gonna stiffen up the chassis real good with sf connectors, strut tower brace, etc. then i shouldnt have much of a rattle problem i hope.

You could just spray that expending urethane foam behind all the interior panels, up under the dash, and into all the empty body cavities and you won't have a squeek for ever.

If you use expanding urathane, you have to be careful to not bulge your pannels. Just take the car apart and sound deaden it entirely with Second Skin or something similiar.

lol... that was joking, but in reality if you didn't care that you were forever sealing the interior panels to the body an dthe wiring would be stuck into there too... I guess you could do it.
I would try it on a Mustang.

what exactly is Urethane foam? Is it anything like the spray foam substitute for popcorn when shipping fragile things?
Earlsfat
02-08-2006, 06:27 PM
It's an insulation foam. You spray it and it EXPANDS! Obviously alot. You can buy it in a can for residential type use, but alot of places use to insulate concrete / cinder block buildings. It's yellowish. Expands wosre than shaving cream, is sticker than anything I can thing of, and dries like a rigid type foam. They use it because it's easier to get where you want it. Poke the nozzle in a hole, pull the trigger, the foam fills up the hole, and dries to the touch in like 5-10 minutes and cures in a couple hours.
I was kidding when I said that, so don't try it, but if you've ever used it you would understand what I was talking about.

I'd like to see that... If some A-hole sprayed that that in MY door to stop rattling he'd be replacing the whole door real quick. That stuff would cease up all the window components... not to mention make running wire through the doors impossible.
It also retains water like sponge sorta. Bad for a trunk, although they might not know that.

If I understood it right, the trick is spraying it in the door and then rolling the window down all the way, therefore cutting a channel in the foam for the window. PITA to get out, but a fully sealed door.
*edit* I don't remember what they did about the water issue, but I remember it being addressed with something, just can't remember what right now.

Different stuff then... Urethane foam is like THE stickiest shit around. Unless they coated the entire inner door (mechanisms and all) with oil or vaseline to create some kind of non-stikcy barrier, your door is ruined. Maybe a different blend??? I don't know... but if they are using the shit me and Dylan are talking about... they've f'd up a lot of people's cars.
It HAS to be different stuff or these guys are really stupid. Urethane foam decays when exposed to moisture. The stuff I see takes some absolutely horrid abuse, and it lasts about 1-2 years and then it needs to be recoated. (Mushroom houses if you were wondering.) But it gets water logged, speaking from experience here, and eventually, in a door or trunk it would start to stink, and there ain't much you can do about it.
Now... if they remove all the door parts, put this stuff in, and CARVE OUT the cavities to put the parts back... that's a different story. But I doubt it.
