Electric window frayed cable

Hi everyone,

Has anyone ever experienced a frayed cable in the regulator of an electric window? I have just had to have the regulator replaced. I had a previous thread about how to get the door panel off to see if a broken door catch part might have been left inside the door. I didn't have the time to do that and went to the dealer.

The dealer would not let me observe the work due to insurance regulations. Are the cables that cheap to fray on their own or would you suspect the broken door catch causing it to fray.

And it's probably the passenger side......you just gotta get used to the crap gm puts in there trucks.....mine broke twice so far in the past 3 years.......the last time it was a total mess......

It was on the drivers side. That is where the door catch broke. The coincidence of that breaking and then the window cable fraying is what makes me think the part was jammed in there with the cable rubbing against it. Why does the cable fray? I'd assume it frays from the friction or rubbing against something that it should not rub against.

I actually had the exact same thing happen to me about 6 weeks ago (frayed cable, driver's side). Replaced the regulator but not before going to a few dealerships to find a fairly priced unit.

Just to be nosy rainman0,where are you from and how much did the dealership charge you for the part?

I had the same thing happen to me, on my driver's door a few months ago. I think the problem lies in the quality of the cable. GM is using a low grade galvanized cable, and here in New York, that isn't going to cut it. I bought an after market regulator unit, cost me about $90. I sprayed some silicone spray on the cables of the regulator before I buttoned everything up. Not sure how that's going to work, but I sleep better at night:screwy:

dokie, I live in Canada - the first dealer which is the dealership I bought my truck from wanted $485, the second wanted around $300. I chatted with my contact at an Acura dealership who put me onto his contact at a nearby GM dealership. Paid $160!!

I can't understand how these dealerships have such variances in pricing. Makes me angry that they soak unsuspecting customers like that.

How did you know it was a frayed cable? Did you actually see it. The reason I ask is, I recently had my door panel off because my drivers side speaker and the up direction on the mirrors stop working. I didn't really have time to dig into it but, I did notice that as this bundle of wires enters the door there is no protection on the inside if you were to reach up from inside the door. There is a cutout that I believe the wires are rubbing on. Please disregard this if your frayed wire/s were caused by the power window itself. Anyone else notice this or have problems with other items within the door?

Also on another note that I'm not sure if it's connected to my problems is sometimes when I turn the key to start my truck I get nothing. My battery gauge needle is always up around 15 volts when it's running. I'm not sure but, I could have a small short that is draining the battery and causing the alt to constantly charge. I've already tried a new battery and this one is doing the same thing. Connections are clean. Could be the alt but, I have a feeling I have a small short somewhere that is draining the battery. Does anyone have any thoughts? When I find the problems I'll report back here. TIA

Ah, I think I've got a bad spot in my starter for one problem.
