painting the interior WHITE<<?>>HELP!

i started painting my interior with that interior paint....and it started to flake off all ready!!!! lol, i made sure the surface was free from any grease or dirt..what is the trick to that sh!t....?

do you have to apply it really thick so it gets rubbery...cause i applied it in 3-4 thin coats..and it looked great..until it flaked..i could just rub it right off with my hand..i also didnt sand it .so that may be the problem..but i didnt want to sand it cause the dash and other plastic has fine texture to it?

has anyone tried that spray dye for the interior?

im looking to redo it..so any tips would be appreciated..

Okay... Here's the process I used to paint my trim pieces (and remember, TAKE YOUR TIME!!! It's a pain, but it's worth it):

Wash with soapy water to remove built-up grime. (Make sure to wash all of it, not just the parts you are painting, cuz by handling it, you could be moving the dirt around).

Swab with rubbing alcohol to remove any petroleum products such as armoral, etc.

Sand using 320 grit sandpaper.

Wash again with soapy water.

Spray 1st coat of primer. Use LIGHT strokes! For every coat of primer, paint, or clear enamel, I probably sprayed 20-25 light strokes! After every few strokes, I would give it a few minutes before continuing.

Let the primer dry, then sand with 320 grit paper.

Wash with soapy water.

Spray 2nd coat of primer.

Sand again, wash again.

Spray paint. I used 3-4 coats of paint (once again about 20-25 strokes per coat, give it plenty of time every few strokes... I smoked ALOT of cigarettes that day!).

Once all the paint is dry, apply an enamel clear-coat (another 2-3 coats using the same process as the paint).

Let that dry OVERNIGHT or for at LEAST 12 hours! If I were you, I'd actually give it 24 hours.

That's it... Sounds like a pain in the ass (and it is), but it's worth it!

It took me about 12 hours to paint all of the following:

Center-console screw-covers, rear ash-tray, all the dash vent housings, both door-handle housings, cigarette lighter, and 2 other pieces...

If I had really gotten into it, I could've done the rest of the stuff at the same time, but I wanted to make sure the process worked before doing everything.

Oh yeah... Another thing. About half-way through this process, I went to the hardware store for some supplies, and I bought a plastic pistol-grip attachment for spray cans. Basically, it clips to the top of a spray can, and when you pull the trigger, a lever pushes the spray nozzle of the can down... I thought this would help. Anyways, the paint has to shoot through a hole in the plastic attachment. As it does so, paint particles build up on the edges of the hole, and then get blown off by the spray in the form of drops. I discovered this while doing some priming, so all I had to do was sand out the drops, but it pissed me off really bad. Anyways, don't buy one of those things.

It took me 2 weeks to do my entire interior white. and i still have to finish the dash.

what color did you paint all those pieces?and how r they holding up...did any of the paint come off!! also what kind of paint was it????

I painted all those pieces yellow, and they're in great shape, no problems at all.

For primer, I used some Rustoleum (had it lying around). For paint, I used some Krylon interior/exterior paint that I picked up at the local auto-parts chain. For the enamel, it was Rustoleum Crystal Clear Enamel.

im in the middle of doing mine right now all white, I just removed my dash, check out pics in the thread "removing dash"...im using krylon flat white paint and tons of clear coat (thanks to jeff for the info)...It goes on thick and doesnt flake off its more concentrated than those cheaper paints...I tried doing the primer, vinyl paint and clear coat but its too much money when you can save using krylon.

Since we are all on the subject of white interior, I was thinking of painting the center trim (shit that goes around the climate control and headunit) and the center console white, but nothing else. Do you guys think this is a good idea, or will it just look gay?

that looks fucking badass. I think I might do that. How hard is it to get the trim shit around the vents off? I have taken the center piece (around stereo and climate control) off before but dunno about those trim pieces.

Also, what is your paint recomendation?

the side vents are bitches cause they can break off but theres some trick im sure someone knows to get them off...use krylon and clear coat for painting...its all u need

Aight, unless someone posts up some good instructions, I wont do the side vents cause I dont want to risk it.

So I gather the center vent trim isnt too bad?

It's tricky and they break really easy.
But if you use a flat head screw driver and near the bottom of the vents (curved round part) place it in and slow pry towards yourself. It should pop out without very much ease.
BUT DONOT pry up near the top of the vent or you will snap it..

Ok guys, got the center trim off and both the side vents. I am also doing the plastic moldings behind where you open the door. But how to I get off the center vent pieces?

never mind, i did the side vents, they ended up looking like shit, I bought new side vents off a friend who wrecked his 90 sedan and is parting it out. I am not going to try to do the vents again. Good thing i didnt do the centers cause he didnt still have em. I also did the plastic where the interior door handle/window control is, those look badass. I did my center bezel, but it looks kind of crappy, so i might take it out when I get around to it, sand it down and try again.

Ok, got another center piece at junkyard. Cept my interior is dark blue and the piece i got is charcoal black, and so are my new vents. I ended up sanding the old one, and painting it white. Looks halfway decent now, I will put it into car and see if I like it, if not, I will probably ebay the shit, will post pics soon.

When you painted your vents, did you just paint the vent trim? or did you paint the louvers too?

I just painted the trim around the slats, but it was a beatch, cuz I had to cut all those plastic welds holding them together...

I painted the entire thing which was the problem, i should have just painted the trim cause that would have looked tight.
