tsi fwd v. tsi awd

i want to find a gen 1 but i am not getting anything other then the turbo types. but which is better? (faster) (better handeling) anything relevant.

If you just get FWD your gonna be wheel hopping all the time once you start giving it more power. The AWD though, will launch like no other car but is heavier than the FWD... I'd say it all depends on what your gonna do with the car. If you plan on leaving it stock then either one would be a good buy. If your gonna do a few moderate things (open element, exhaust, bov, turn up the boost a little) then you can still get away with either. But if you plan on doing everything you can short of building the motor, then your gonna want the AWD. The AWD will also handle way better on turns and in the snow. :2cents:

plan is to modify... alot. the thing that bothers me though is you cant find a good gen 1 worth the asking (or arguing final) price. they are always asking far more than what its worth. and you can almost never find a pure stock one. (which is what i want) it would almost be easier to find a wrecked awd and throw the inturnals into a good body (since alot of the bodies are rusted out by now).

Nah, there are still lots of em out there that are in really nice shape and stock. My friend who lives in Cincinnati Ohio is selling his and its bone stock and in excellent condition. Got 2 little dents in it but other than that it would be a perfect car if your planning on doing a lot to it. Here, I'll just give ya the link to that thread.

its obviosuly going to be hard finding a perfect condition 1g... considering they are 12+ years old. just find a decent one that needs work, and get it. i would recomend the awd if ur gonna mod it... you dont want to have to worry about traction when u take off with all those ponies.

AWD is for 3 things, off the line launch, auto X, and snow.

FWD is beter or the same in most other situations. like highway driving, racing from a roll. And a FWD puts more power to the ground, because of less drive train loss. now if that power on the ground has traction thats another thing.

if you plan on highly modifiying, like big turbo etc, get awd. unless you want to launch all the time, or auto X, fwd is going to be just as good

I have blown alot of cars away on roll ons because they did not want go from a dead start since i am AWD. The ones that go from dead start forget it, im at the next stop light while there trying not to spin and being :owned:

the year is right, but im a stick fan. not to mention that it's 300 some miles away. i like the early gen1's because its so easy to under estimate them. once they started geting more styling and people started modding them, people started to back off from racing the laster years, but poeple arent afraid to race a 15 or 16 year old, old looking car. plus i hear the gen 1 motors were better then the later years. actually, the college im planning on going to is right near sloboy in PA i may pick one up from near there. (that will suck though that'll give me 3 cars < insurance YAY)

I say go for awd, it sounds like you already made that decision. Keep looking, don't settle for something you don't really want. I live in IL and there are tons of dsms around here (made in IL), check dsmtuners.com, dsmtalk.com, and the usual car sites autotrader.com, cars.com, etc. Oh about the engines in the 1g's the 90 to early 92 had the 6bolt blocks. just get the one with the flip-up lights, they look better anyway.

Traction problems can be overcome. So I would say go for the best deal whether it be GST or GSX.

and 6 bolt good? i was goin for the 90/91 years, i hated the 93 look.

Yeah the 6bolt is good, it is less prone (not that the 7bolt is that prone to it) to crankwalk. There are many reasons why its better check in the faq.

i cant believe its harder to find a car i want (how hard can it be to find an early gen1 tsi awd with a stick< most people hate sticks), its actually easier to find parts for it... a local junkyard has like 10 90's and 12 91's. NOW WHY THE HELL CANT I FIND A WHOLE.
