Coil Pack or Crank Sensor?

:banghead: I own a 95 geo metro-5 speed, fuel injected, 3 cylinder; always ran great. Today while driving, car suddenly bucked, stalled and then would not start,it would not turn over(like it was flooded, but it wasn't). The guy who towed car checked coil pack and there was no spark but said it may be crank sensor also. then we looked for gas tank safety reset button[not sure of the correct name] back in the hatchback wall area but could not find, no mention in car manual either. Does this car even have a gas tank safety reset to prevent a spark in the event of an accident? He said it was not the fuel pump because he poured some gas right into the spot under the air filter. Can anyone provide some feedback?

When you are cranking does your rotor turn,if not you probably got a broken timing belt.

I'm not sure about the throttle spray but when we took the air filter off it was dry even during cranking.
If its the timing belt, how expensive is it to fix?
p.s. when it bucked just prior to stalling it jumped out of gear. I will be calling my mechanic later today(monday)for the diagnosis.

If your timing belt broke, you will definetely get lots of fuel spraying from the injector. There will be no vaccuum, ussually caused by the cylinders pumping, which draws the fuel into the throtle body.

When you turn the key to the on position, you should here the hum of the fuel pump for about 3 seconds. Fuel pump is in the back, inside the tank, I believe.

I got a timing belt for about $30 Can. You may want to replace the cam and crank seal while you are at it. Those should cost about $30 for both. It took me about two hours to install the belt and seals. BTW there are two marks on the cam gear for setting the timing. They should be 60a and 80c. Since you have a three cyl. like mine, you will use the 80c mark. Good luck, and if you need more info, just ask. You're mechanic should book about 1.1 hours plus parts.

? I could be wrong - but if the timing belt is broke the ECU won't get a crank signal - therefore it won't fire the injector. So I don't think there will be any fuel spraying.

Timing belts run about $30 as jai stated and labor will probably run you $100-$150 depending on what your shop bills per flat rate hour.

What are you talking about!?

I replaced my timing belt this last summer, just for safety, and there were no
such marks on the toothed pulleys.

There was just one mark on each toothed pully which I lined up with the marks
on the engine as the Chilton Manual says......

Are you referring to something inside the valve cover?

Bill, you may not have the same marks that mine has. I think you have a 91' right? My car is a 95' the same as JDmetro's. I just changed my timing belt about two or three weeks ago, and this question of which timing mark to use was a real stumbling block for me, as I used the wrong on the first time I put it all back together. As I don't own a digital camera, like you, I didn't photograph any of this. There are old posts where I found this info, which ultimately saved the day.

One more thing. I don't know what is wrong with this fellows engine, but I did have a seperated timing belt, ie, several teath broke off, and it was barely holding by the horizontal fibers. So, I guess it wasn't broken, and probably was turning the cam shaft. If this person's timing belt is broken, and not just skipped, it may not inject fuel, I don't know. Mine definately was injecting fuel. Sorry for any confusion.
