Cost of building an auto trailer

I'm thinking about building an auto trailer. But I was wondering about how much it will cost to build a good size trailer that will be able to hold a mid to a large size car?

Thanks

Don't build - buy used.
It's cheaper, especially if you are prepared to fix it up a bit.

Also, often the trickiest part is getting the trailer brakes to work.
You can get away without trailer brakes, but it would be illegal in most states, not to mention dangerous.

I agree with magicrat, you'll save alot by buying used. I worked at a trailer shop for a few years, it costs around $800 to build a single axle 12 foot trailer(thats at whole sale prices). As for the brakes, most trailers under around 26 foot do not have brakes, and as long as you drive properly its not really a big issue. I have seen used trailers large enough to easly haul a car for around $300, sometimes cheeper depending on how bad they want to get rid of it. Usually on used trailers be prepaired to replace the flooring if it is wood.

The reason I ask is because I'll be getting the steel for a very low price (I think its about 50% off or so). Thank you guys for the input. I'll keep my eyes open for a cheap one.

Thanks

I decieded not to buy the car yet, instead I'm building an enduro car for some dirt track racing. If I can get the extra money to buy the car I will, but right now its not looking good. The car is still for sale for 300 bucks

My parents little 4x8 flat bed trailer cost them $60... the steel alone (even at 50% discount) would likely cost twice that.

the school's automechanic teacher bought a 15x7 flat bed wit ha rotted out floor for $200 to turn it into a massive 1500gal barbie. he jsut had to replace one of the bearings and replace a rim and tire (didnt have to replace the rim and tire but he did anyway).

Friend of mine bought a 20x7 trailer with 2 1/2 ft up front for tools and storage and flip down ramps for tires for $550 in perfect condition minus some minor rust. it was easily a $1400 trialer new on sale.

Hey, you post better than half the members here. That just proves my theory that people are ignorant, or lazy.

So did you find a trailer yet?

Not right now because of money issues and because of my other project now. I had the option of restoring a car or building a 4cyl enduro car for a dirt track. I choose the Linc because the guy had to sell it then. But I do agree that some people on these forms are ignorant. But everyone is at one point or another, just some more then others. But oh well, there is nothing that we can do...
