Hi, I'm wondering how reliable the older Ford Taurus' are in general. I'm considering buying a 1992 GL with 147,000 miles. It has a 3.0 V6. It runs well and seems to have been well taken care of. I believe I can get this car for about $800-$1000. Wise investment? I'm not looking for anything more than reliable transportation.

I would check a few things. First I would pull the transmission dipstick and see if the fluid is fairly clear or red, also smell the fluid for any signs of a burnt smell. Also check the boots on the constant velocity joints for tears, you may have to look closely in the creases. At this mileage the tie rod ends and ball joints(lower only) will probably be getting loose if they haven't already been replaced. I could go on but those are the important things I can state offhand. I would take it for a good test drive if you haven't already. If all checks out well, I personally would buy it at that price. It will probably need some repairs along the line, but I would rather patronize the repairman than the bank(intrest) or the insurance man(collision insurance) you would just need liability. Just my opinion, hopefully you will get more replies.
