Sounds like it needs some work...I think I would try for $3000. Just remind him that all that work at a shop will the car up to about $5K. If you have any mechanical knowhow, it wouldn't be a terrible deal so long as the car isn't a pile to look at and the interior isn't trashed. After the brakes and clutch, it will be nickel and dime crap...water pumps, lights, misc. bs stuff. If you don't have to take every little thing to a mechanic, it shouldn't be that bad. As far as reliable, 155K miles really depends on how well the car was maintained previously. It could be. My cars usually hold up past 150K. I would get it if it feels right. If you drive it or theres somehting inside tellign you to be wary, then Id let it go and find a lower mileage car for a little more...

How much do you think that I could find a trans am or formula in good shape for and with less miles?

Where are you located? In Florida, Firebirds tend to be a little pricey due to the weather I guess. Around here, $5000 should be able to buy a decent Trans-Am in that year range...LT1 that is. For a low mileage, under 80K, Trans-Am you may see them for as much as $7000. I'd say, you can pick up a decent fair mileage Trans-Am for about $5K if you wait for the deal to come along.
