Ok guys I have taken in people suggestions and I have my list of 6 cars I am considering buying
Its gonna happen either Feb 20-25 (spring break) or end of April...I know this probably should be in the car comparisons forum, but I respect your opinions and tendencies towards fun-to-drive cars
So here goes
1997 Acura Integra GSR - Its really at the top of my list, and probably will be the one I purchase if I can find a good one. I have no reason NOT to buy the car
1997 Mazda Mx-6 - fun little sporty 2-door car, its inexpensive, and I like Mazdas...Reliability is a serious question
2001 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24 - least expensive car of the group, cheap to fix, looks decent, good on insurance
1999 VW GTI - quick little car, fun to drive, not too expensive...
1998 Toyota Celica GT-S - Its a girls car, no matter how I try to look at its reliability, it being a quick little 2 door, with a nice 5-speed, its resale value...Im gonna have alot of trouble buying this car
1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX - Serious availability problems in Canada so I might end up paying more than its worth... Reliability? My msn conversation with my buddy who's a mechanic
Him: i have one for you... ppl who consider buying a DSM pack (explitive deleted)
Me: hey...my dsm would KILL you
Him: hahha probably.. all the work required ripping apart the motor and electrical systems on a daily basis would tire me to death
Me: yeah...at least mine can start!
Him: yeah well at least myne will get more than a block away from my house *when it starts* before breaking down and have to push it back to my driveway. at least you'll get a good work out. all the walking to and fromt he bus stops because the motor continuously breaks.. or pushing it up hills because the electrical system is retarded like a kid with downsyndrome and ADD all in one
Really not sure about the reliability

i'd go with the integra. everyone i know that had one loved it and it's probably the fastest of the group after the eclipse.

I would hands down go with the GTI, its real easy to make that into a fast lil car. You may have to deal with a window into your door but that motor will run good and strong a long time.

ehh im prolly the only person who would vote for a cavalier. But they can be made reliable and fast for pretty cheap with boost. No to mention they are getting a really good tunning software from HPtuners whenever they finally release it. . .

I'd get either the GTI or the Integra. The GTI is more likely to have electrical or minor mechanical problems (like door locks), and the Integra is more likely to be stolen.

I said Celica GT-S, but the GS-R would be my second choice. None of the others are as reliable. The GS-R is your best bet though, and i'm sure you can find a wealth of aftermarket support for it.

Wow, bunch of Honda fanbois here. Fuck the Integra, it's slow. Get the DSM, never look back. As long as you take care of it, it will take care of you. Seriously, everyone thinks they're wicked unreliable, but these are usually the 16-year old punks who go out and beat the fuck out of their cars without maintaining them. The GSX is the only decently quick car on that list, and it's cheap and easy to make REALLY quick. Dump maybe $1500-$2000 into it, not even, and you'll run 12's easy.

I choose the Celica myself. I like the styling more than the other, it handles well and can be modded well. I also think it'll be one of the more reliable cars out of that list.
However, any of the cars in the list are good choices.

crankwalk stigma aside, I'd still go for the GSX. Tons of potential and a big aftermarket. As long as you take care of it, it shouldn't give you too many problems as long as you find one that hasn't been ragged on. And like keymaster said, you can get one to be pretty damn fast for not a whole hell of a lot of money.

I wonder how hard it would be to find a GSX that hasn't been thrashed by it's previous owners though...

My buddy found a 99 GSX in good shape with 72XXX miles on it. We cleaned the intercooler, put in some new plugs and wires and gapped them correctly and the car runs great. I think he has like 85XXX on it now and it still runs fine. Trick is to find a stock one like my friend did which may be a little harder but would be well worth it.

I wouldn't go for it. My sister drives a 1st gen DSM, and it's nothing but one problem after another. She bought it with 9xxxx miles, in perfect condition, well taken care of, never abused, and something is always breaking on that car.

I choose the Celica myself. I like the styling more than the other, it handles well and can be modded well. I also think it'll be one of the more reliable cars out of that list.
The problem wiht the Celica is that you have to be carefull when modding it. I've heard more horror stories of people reving it to high just once and blowing the motor than on any other car. I'm sure I heard its a pretty high strung motor already, but thats just what I've seen and heard. Its aslo gonna be hard to find any used car on the list that hasn't been thrashed on that bad because of the normal age group that buys them. They are all great tuner platforms for anyone that is serious about tunning, but, at the same time, most kids that pick up these cars think serious tunning is slapping on a fart can and cutting the bottom of the intake box and thinking they can run twelves by double clutching and power shifting.
Thats why I say go with the 'Teg. I mean, its a Honda, so even if you do pick up one thats gone through hell like that, its gonna run pretty good, and if it doesn't parts for them a rea dime a fucking dozen so its not gonna be all that bad to repair it, 'specially if you do the work yourself. And doesn't the GSR come with the B18C? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I belive thats the best B serries for boosting, and can take up to 10psi with stock internals. That, and again, its a Honda, it'll last for ever. One of the guys in my house has one o the four door 'Tegs, and he has over 200k miles on it.

See its these little stories that are really scaring me away from the GSX...its the perfect car to give me what I want, but I get so many warnings from people about its reliability
But the GTI seems more appealing as well...but you guys have really suggested what I initially thought....theres really no reason not to buy the GSR except for the theft problems

I've driven
Mx-6
Calvalier
Celica
and a GTI
None of which for any long period of time...probably averaging like an hour
I haven't driven a Teg but I've driven a swapped B18 Civic, and I owned (haha leased) an RSX Type S so Im pretty sure I know what Acuras about
Mistubishi hasn't been in Canada for very long so I don't know anybody with a DSM, but Mitsubishi dealerships at home is so desperate to sell Im sure I could drive one of their used eclipses

Eh, it really depends. Like pretty much everyone else, I'm going to say the GSR for realibility or the dsm for cheap speed. I'm sure the GTI would be a good choice as well, but I've always been turned off of them (90% of my previous co-workers owned and worshipped them like they had been passed down from Mt. Olympus by Apollo himself.)
Depending on your needs and finances, I'd say DSM or Acura. My Honda was a great car, and I'd love to pick up another early 90s one for a daily driver/beater...plus the GSR does have a little pep to it, and plenty of aftermarket.
The DSM is hands down the cheapest to get competitively fast with. I haven't owned one, so I can't really comment on reliability other than what I've heard, which I'm sure you've heard as well. Plus you also mentioned due to living in Canada this may cost you more than it's worth. So I guess it really comes down to what you want out of the car.

I've heard plenty of god awefull storys about those eclipses... just ask musashi, his wife owned one with 50K or something and 10K later it had like 5,000 worth of repairs that needed to be done.

*Update
Well things have taken a bad turn...For insurance reasons the car was set to go under my dads name. Unfortunately he recently put his brothers work vehicle under his name (without telling me)...and now my GSR has to go under my name
Insurance.... $6,000 a year...thats right 6 grand a year almost half the cars value in insurance in 1 year
So unfortunately the GSR is out...and its basically guarenteed the GSX, GTI, and GT-S will have similar insurance figures...That means Z24, MX-6 (possibly), some other car, or nothing at all
I am so incredibly furious I can't think straight now...I HATE insurance companies and I HATE each and every idiot, moronic ricer driver who now makes me one of the most statistically dangerous drivers on the road...
Im also soooo depressed right now...I walked to class every day dreaming of driving my GSR...When I was studying for midterms and getting tired, I thought of the fact that if I like fail out of schoo I can't get my GSR...I missed my RSX Type S when I had to give it back...but Im sadder now...

Dude...just get a Civic..and do a swap. Find yourself a DX, CX, or VX (5th gen) and put in the engine (GSR that is). Granted it won't ever look like a GSR, but hey, you will have the performance, and also, you can swap in the GSR dash and seats. So it will somewhat have the same interior. A major plus, insurance will be incredibly cheap for either of those 3 models. I mean, I'm sure you've thought of it, but I'm just throwing it in there as a reminder.
Good luck with your find. Hope you find something suitable for your needs.

But on the other hand, your dad should be able to have more than one car under his name. Think about it, insurance companies aren't going to tell you "Sir, we think you have too many toys. We are simply not willing to insure you with this one".

Sucks about the insurance, but we arent all that bad. As for the celica being a GT-S they didnt make those in 98 They Brought back the GT-S in 00. The year you are refering to has the bug eyes, the GT-FOUR model, thats the one i had. Since you are down to 2 choices i'd go for the cav.

cav = good gas milage, and great insurance. just make sure u get a +96 z24, and you'll love the car. its like as fast as a gsr i think...not sure. cuz ran 15.8 stock...96 z24 with the 2.4L engine...only prob is tq steer and wheel hop. new motor mounts should fix that

I checked the insurance on the Z24 and its actually $4,800...When doing some research I found a Canadian stat of the most expensive cars to ensure
The Integra was 2, the GTI was 4 and the Z24 was 7
and as for my driving record...I've been driving for 4 almost 5 years, I have 0 tickets, and 0 accidents. But because I am in that Male 16-25 age bracket, buying a car that insurance thinks is dangerous for this age bracket I am being penalized
However, from what I got from my insurance guy, we are kind of in a weird loop-hole right now because we had a bunch of insurance name changes that werent followed up on....so right now we are paying $2,000 for me on the protege (it should be closer to $3,500) which in Ontario is a sweet deal...so when we give it back, if we replace it with a very similar model we can keep the same rate
Therefore I am now looking for a comprable car to the Protege
2002 Mazda Protege5
2003 Pontiac Vibe
2000/2001 Honda Civic (probably not)
2002 Ford Focus
2003 Mitsubishi Lancer
oh and now that insurance is fucking me on this car...I plan to mod the hell out of the economy car they force me to buy
and suggestions? Thanks again guys...
